Are we becoming more civilized?

Prof. Edward S. Herman dissects Stephen Pinker's book, "The Better Angels of our Nature," which suggests that humanity is progressing towards more civilized behaviour. Herman believes that the book is a gift to the ruling class.
At a time when a sitting U.S. President is saying that he can do anything he likes, including assassinating Americans, Herman is skeptical that America is becoming a kinder and gentler nation.
Why do we have a Congress that seems to think it is fun to have a major war in the Middle East? Chalmers Johnson has suggested that the institution of the military has taken over American society. As the Taylor Report states, "it's an amazing scene that so many ugly things have been institutionalized."

Mate (mah-TAY) shows that addiction is caused not by chemical substances but by the complex interaction of brain, experience, the environment (including society & the economy), and chemical substances. Our stressful, exploitative economic system is a major factor causing addiction. And since The System's "War on Drugs" does little good and much harm, could its REAL goals be more sinister than its professed goals?

The straight economics of the Northen Gateway pipeline

The Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines Project is a proposal to construct twin pipeline running from Bruderheim, Alberta, to Kitimat, British Columbia. The eastbound pipeline would import natural gas condensate and the westbound pipeline would export crude oil to the new marine terminal in Kitimat where it will be transported to Asian markets by oil tankers. The project is developed by Enbridge Inc., a Canadian crude oil and liquids pipeline company.
In a detailed analysis submitted to the National Energy Board, Robyn Allan, the former president and CEO of the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, concludes that "Northern Gateway is neither needed nor is in the public interest." Robyn Allan explains her economic study and the economic affect that the pipeline project will have on the Canadian economy.

Peat mining in Hecla threatens lake health

In the summer of 2011, the Manitoba government enacted the Save Lake Winnipeg Act. This act was created to save the state of lake Winnipeg, which has been the center of concern in terms of population. The Hecla / Grindstone area is a series of islands and peninsulas in the south basin of Lake Winnipeg, 175 kilometers north of Winnipeg. SunGro is asking for a license to operate a 531-hectare peat mine inside Hecla Parkâthe Hay Point Peat Mineâclose to the shore of Lake Winnipeg, for the next 45 years. Peat is mainly used in gardening as a soil additive and conditioner. Peatlands are the worldâs largest storehouse of soil carbon and provide important ecological services, such as groundwater recharge and pollutant filtration. Although peat has been mined for decades, there is still no way to restore a peat bog. Gaile Whelan Enns from Manitoba Wildlands explains the background to the environmental concerns and the legal concerns to peat mining in Manitoba.
