Vancouver housing activists form union for renters

Mayor Gregor Robertson created a Blue Ribbon Affordability Task Force to come up with short and long-term solutions as the high cost of housing in Vancouver. Housing activist Nathan Crompton says that what renters in the city need to do is form a union and get together to organize for cheaper rents in their buildings.

Seniors in housing complex fight rent hike

When the Mount Pleasant Lions Club decided to raise the rents by 45% at a housing complex for low-income seniors, they probably didn't expect the tenants to fight back. But they did. And they won. Peter Driftmier spoke with resident Andy Lai a couple of days before the Residential Tenancy Branch turned down the rent increase.

Arthur Manuel of the Secwepemc Nation on First Nations-Crown Summit

For our feature interview, we talk to Arthur Manuel, a member of the Secwepemc Nation, in the South-Central Interior of British Columbia, Canada, who served as Chief of the Neskonlith Indian Band for eight
years and the Chairperson for the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council for seven years. Manuel also headed the Interior Alliance and currently serves as volunteer Chairperson for the Indigenous Network on Economies and Trade (INET), and is part of the Defenders of the Land network.
We talked to Arthur Manuel about the results of the First Nations-Crown Summit on January 25, 2012, a dissect the Conservative govt's claims that First Nations will be given greater autonomy, which will actually amount to the liquidation of the land base of First Nations communities through municipalization and privatization of land through the 'fee simple' process.

Guelph hosts vigil to honour 11 victims of migrant worker van tragedy

On Monday, February 6th, a van carrying thirteen Peruvian farm workers as well as one farm worker from Nicaragua collided with a transport truck in Hampstead, outside Waterloo, Ontario. *Eleven lives were lost, including ten migrant farm workers and the driver of the truck.
Dozens of supporters paid their respects to the victims of the crash at the two vigils that took place in Guelph, Ontario on Monday, February 13th: one at the University of Guelph, the second at St. George's Square. The speakers made connections between violence against racialized immigrants from economically poor countries, the Canadian immigration system, and the subordination of racialized working-poor migrants. Alicja Grzadkowska interviewed the organizers of the vigils, an all-volunteer migrant worker advocacy group in Guelph called Fuerza/Puwersa, as well as speakers from the event:

I don't really do theme-shows, but christ almight on a pogo-stick, I find all of the negativity that surrounds this non-holiday to be sort of cringe-inducing. At the end of the day, I'm ambivalent to Valentine's Day. Which uis why I don't really understand the bitterness and bitchiness that 95% of the people I know are compelled to demonstrate 'round this time of year. If you have a significant other, it's a convenient day to celebrate that. If you don't, it's a convenient day to get drunk. Where's the problem, guys? I'm playing love-songs, until I run out of them. Love songs about drinking, of course. We DO have standards to uphold, up in this piece.
