Living with a rare medical condition - HHT

This week we spoke with Mary Ellyn Parker about living with a rare medical condition called Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia. She worked as a nurse in the Niagara Region for over 30 years and in 2001 she was diagnosed with HHT. She spoke about the challenges of finding a diagnosis for her symptoms and the experiences of switching from being someone who is used to giving care to now having to depend on others. A critical message that Mary Ellyn spoke about is the importance of physicians listening to patients and really hearing what they have to say. The second installment of a conversation with Dr. Allen Straw of Virginia Cooperative Extension includes details on cover cropping and migrant labor, including the facts about the H-2A program, some of them quite surprising. H-2A is the program which allows agricultural employers who anticipate a shortage of domestic workers to bring non-immigrant foreign workers. The musical interlude is Gillian Welch’s “One More Dollar” a story of a man who came to work the fields and never earned enough money to go back home.

OWNY evicted from fixing abandoned homes. Why? February 19, 2012

Occupy Buffalo was evicted nearly three weeks ago from Niagara Square. Now just a few days ago, Occupy WNY was barred from continuing to fix up an old, abandoned, inner-city house. Why? Doesn't benefit everyone in the city when a group of activists get together and start rebuilding an old, abandoned home? The city has been allowing a large number of homes to remain abandoned and deteriorate. Meanwhile, a large number of Americans continue to lose their homes and find themselves homeless and/or jobless. Buffalo, NY remains one of the poorest cities in the country. Why can't the city of Buffalo allow, even encourage, these activists to help rebuild poor neighborhoods?

Occupy Buffalo evicted from Niagara Sq! pt.1 Feb. 5th, 2012

Occupy Buffalo was distinctive in that up until recently it was supported by city officials and the police. However, the contract they'd had with the city expired on Feb.2nd. Late that night, the police raided the encampment, haphazardly removing personal belongings which were dumped into a truck, destroying tents, teepee, and geodesic dome then arresting ten occupiers who refused to leave the encampment. Why did the city suddenly turn on the occupy movement? Did infighting within the movement factor in? Many women in the occupy movement in Buffalo and elsewhere feel disenfranchised within the very movement that claims to represent 99% of us. This is similar to what had happened to the peace movement back in the 60s. Is history repeating itself? Also author Mari Kozlowski talks about growing up poor. What is our society's attitude toward the poor? How does poverty affect one's psychology? Do the poor have a chance at a better life today in the US? Or is the system set up to keep poor people in their place?

Julie Guard on Stephen Harper's labour policy and threats to public pensions

Since the May 2011 election, the Canadian federal government has actively undermined the ability of workers to bargain collectively. The Conservative majority government of Stephen Harper has also cut spending on programs that benefit workers and lower-income Canadians. More cuts are likely coming, possibly to Old Age Security, other income-security program and public-sector pensions. Julie Guard, professor and coordinator at the Labour Studies Program of the University of Manitoba, talks about strategies to fight attacks on workers and on lower-income Canadians.
