Leonard Conolly on George Bernard Shaw

In Maxims for Revolutionists from the play Man and Superman, George Bernard Shaw wrote: "Do not waste your time on Social Questions. What is the matter with the poor is Poverty what is the matter with the rich is Uselessness." Shaw is the subject of the 2012 Master Playwright Festival in Winnipeg. Leonard Conolly is the president of the International Shaw Society, author of The Shaw Festival: The First Fifty Years and an English professor at Trent University. He was in Winnipeg for the opening of Shaw Fest 2012.

It was three years from I Want to Hold Your Hand to Tomorrow Never Knows for the Beatles. In early 1966, John Lennon purchased Timothy Leary's book The Psychedelic Experience, an adaptation of the Egyptian Book of the Dead as a user's guide to LSD, and he wrote this song soon afterwards. It is based on a drone in C Major (played by George Harrison on the tamboura) and Paul McCartney brought in the tape loops used to create an otherworldly feel. John wanted his voice to sound like a "monk on a far-off mountain" so his voice was tracked in ADT through the revolving Leslie speaker -- which was then used for the album title, Revolver. This was the first song recorded for this album.

Tracks made the cut for obvious reasons like song title, artist, album or lyrical content pertaining to all things H20 - creatures, places, sounds - or more obscure tie-ins like songs picked for their fluidity or segments of records with bodies of water on their album covers.

After your vision starts to blur, you may notice that the ominous and soul-rattling sounds you're tasting are being crafted by the friendly folks at Yo La Tengo. We'll have a break then, only to return to an early stoner-rock jam from a forgotten Home-Town pearl, followed by an unbroken hour of scatterlings from everywhere and nowhere. Second half of the show comes in with a request, some mimicry, some soothing fingerpicking, some Jazz Fujion that doesn't suck, some scratchy Garage-Rock from the best of times, as well as some death Blues.
Hendrix's most far-out composition carries us into the night, and what a pleasant farewell. See you next week.

For non-profit educational purposes, public domain material: A collection of 9 classic lectures given by Professor Noam Chomksy dating back as early as the mid 1990s to mid first decade of the 2000s, concerning topics ranging from Class War to the New War on Terrorism. Although these lectures may be available on radio4all courtesy of the recordings of David Barsamian and others, these new files have been re-formatted for enhanced audio quality as well as combined into one file which is useful for people who enjoy lectures on mobile devices such as smartphones and ipods.
