On the 121st anniversary of the massacre at Wounded Knee, indigenous people connected the colonial occupation of Manhattan to Occupy Wall Street
- an occupation of already occupied land. They gathered in order to initiate an open dialogue with OWS, to raise local and national awareness of ongoing Native struggles, and to recognize that the injustices and inequalities we currently confront are the bricks and mortar of conquest and settler colonialism.
Un-settling "occupation" called upon OWS in its yearnings to voice the experiences of the 99% to make space for those most marginalized. As stated during the evening, let us pass the mic, turn up the volume, listen to Native voices, and break down the culture of domination - and find roads which we can walk down together.

Hawaii's Hidden Labour History

Heading down to Toronto is African-American history professor, Gerald Horn, author of âFighting in Paradise.â He presents on his new book, which follows the lesser-known history of communists and indigenous people who created the labour movement in Hawaii, operating 2000 miles from the U.S. mainland.
Next, Montreal's Robin Philpot sheds some light on a well-known but poorly-reported news story, namely the attempts of the Harper government to deport Rwandan-Canadian Leon Mugasera. We are only being told part of this caper in the news, and Philpot explains the unjust accusations and dangers at home Mugasera faces.

3ª Habilitar un puente provisional sobre el rÃo Magdalena, la construcción del puente en el Paso el Colegio, la reparación de las vÃas alternas de Tesalia - Pacarnà -Yaguará y la de La Plata - El Pital - Garzón. El cierre total del puente Paso el Colegio, en la vÃa que conecta al centro del Huila con el suroccidente del departamento y el Cauca, corredor que de acuerdo con las autoridades viales permanecerÃa cerrado hasta el 28 de febrero.

Mitt Romney and America The Beautiful

According to Zach Ford at ThinkProgress, on the campaign trail, Mitt Romney likes to regularly quote the lyrics of that great American song, America the beautiful, suggesting that it refers to political and especially so called 'economic freedom'.... But does he realize that the hymn was written by a progressive feminist lesbian who composed it to critique our countryâs greed, excess, and growing economic inequality?
Probably not.
Song writer Katharine Lee Bates wrote her original lyrics in 1894. They were as follows:
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!
She later rewrote the stanza, toning down the rhetoric but maintaining that wealth was not what made America great:
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!
According to Lynn Sherr, Bates âwanted to purify Americaâs great wealth, to channel what she had originally called âselfish gainâ into more noble causes.â
Batesâ revulsion at the inequality and corruption she saw around her was shared by many others who became the core of the Progressive Movement in the early 1900s. The Progressives, of course, would be diametrically opposed to Mitt Romney's regressive ideas on so called 'economic freedom' which translate into little to no taxation on the wealthiest corporations and billionaires while the poor suffer a crushing debt burden. Not exactly Bate's vision, nor what the song is about.
