MLA on welfare in British Columbia

An anti-poverty group in Vancouver issued a challenge for an MLA in the province to live on the equivalent of welfare for a month. Jagrup Brar of the NDP accepted the challenge and began his month on January 1. Bill Hopwood of the Raise the Rates tells us how Brar is faring and what's he found out about life on welfare. Yet labour and social forces opposing the government are still strong. To find out more about these forces in Egyptian society. we contacted Joel Beinin, professor of history and Middle Eastern history at Stanford University.

Guantanamo Remembered: 10 Years

This audio was recorded at the 10th Anniversary remembrance, in honour of those still incarcerated at Guantanamo. The meeting was jointly organised by Cage Prisoners, Reprieve and the Islamic Human Rights Commission.
The meeting in London's Conway Hall began with a recording of a song and a live chant from the Koran, both by former detainees. The meeting and speakers were introduced by Victoria Britain

Bruce Power abandons plan for Alberta nuclear plant

The Ontario energy company had been trying for 4 years to get approval for what would have been Albertaâs first nuclear power plant. Elena Schacherl is chair of Citizens Advocating the Use of Sustainable Energy, a member organization of the coalition Keep Alberta Nuclear Free. She explains the factors that went into Bruce Power's decision to pull out.
