END :CIV examine notre culture de dépendance à la violence systémique et à l'exploitation environnementale et enquête sur l'épidémie résultant des sites contaminés et des nations en état de choc. Basé en partie sur Endgame, le livre au succès retentissant écrit par Derrick Jensen, END :CIV questionne : «Si ton pays se faisait envahir par des extraterrestres qui coupent des forêts, qui empoisonnent l'eau et l'air et contaminent les réserves de nourriture, résisterais-tu?» Les vraies causes de l'effondrement de la civilisation sont habituellement dues à la surutilisation des ressources. Pendant que ces mots sont écrits, le monde est en train d'agoniser sous le chaos économique, le pic pétrolier, le changement climatique, la dégradation de l'environnement et l'agitation politique. Tous les jours, les manchettes remanient les histoires de scandales et de trahison de la confiance du peuple. Nous n'avons pas à faire des demandes indignées pour la fin de ce système mondial actuel : il semble déjà se désagréger. Par contre, des actes de courage, de compassion et d'altruisme abondent, même dans les endroits les plus affectés. En documentant d'une part, la résistance de ceux et celles qui sont le plus touché-e-s par la guerre et la répression, et d'autre part, l'héroïsme de ceux et celles qui vont de l'avant pour confronter la crise la tête haute, END :CIV offre une avenue pour sortir de cette folie dévorante et aller vers un avenir plus sain. Soutenu par la narration de Jensen, le film nous appelle à agir comme si nous aimions vraiment cette terre. Le film offre un rythme soutenu en utilisant de la musique, des images d’archives, des courts-métrages, de l'animation, de la comédie et des satires pour déconstruire le système économique mondial, même s'il implose autour de nous. ODSP recipient, anti-poverty advocate: "The attitude that you must be 'faking it' is incredibly dehumanizing"

Earlier this month, the Hamilton Community Foundation released its annual Vital Signs report, a "community check-up...that measures the vitality of our communities and identifies significant trends in a range of areas critical to quality of life." The report found, among other things, that in several Hamilton neighbourhoods, child poverty rates exceed 50%, and that 18,432 people used Hamilton food banks in the month of March 2011, a number that has risen from pre-recession levels. On today's episode of the HJRC, we focus on one specific finding: that the social assistance caseload in Hamilton is the highest it has been in a decade. Despite the fact that the link between poverty and ill-health is well established, individuals on social assistance continue to face immense hostility from people (including health professionals) who understand social assistance to be a "free-ride," and its recipients to be "lazy," "free-loaders" etc. To dispel these myths, HJR chats with Laura, a member of the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction and an advocate who speaks about her experiences living on Ontario Disability and living with chronic illness.

Smile with Dignity

When a grassroots health group asked people in their community what issues concerned them, the lack of good dental care was a major issue. People reported living with chronic pain, feeling embarrassed in social situations, and being at a disadvantage in the work force. Melanie Spence is an organizer with the Alliance for People's Health. She says the B.C. government should be providing basic dental services for people who aren't able to access care.

Neither Rain Nor Snow Stop Black, Latino, Asian American Unionists March for Occupy Wall Street Despite the rain and snow of the season's first big storm hundreds of people in NYC braved the weather to hail Occupy Wall Street and vowed to help protect the protesters from the ncreasingly harsh weather as winter approaches and the increasing attacks by the city governments nationwide. The rally at City Hall and march to the Occupy site at Wall Street's Freedom Square was organized by the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, the NAACP and the Asian, Pacific American Labor Alliance all representing workers who have been particularly hard hit by the recession. This Rally and March signaled the increasing movement of people of color both in support and joining the Occupy Wall Street movement.
