Supreme Court of Canada rules in support on Insite

On September 30, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled unanimously that the federal health minister had to sign an exemption allowing Vancouver's safe injection site to stay open. Mark Townsend is with the Portland Hotel Society. He joined us in the studio to talk about what the ruling means for the fight for harm reduction in Canada.

This week on Sea Change Radio, host Alex Wise talks with environmental author and journalist, Jeff Goodell. He expounds on his list, recently published in Rolling Stone, of the ten things President Obama could do now, without having to wrestle with Congress, which would have a significant positive environmental impact. He also shares a small bit of the wisdom contained in his 2006 book, Big Coal, helping debunk the myth of âClean Coal,â elucidating the perils of mountain-top removal coal mining, and discussing the role that railroad companies play in energy prices in the United States.

Vandana Shiva: The Seed at the Heart of Freedom (ONE of TWO)

Shiva came in September 2011 to the first national Heirloom Seed Expo held in Santa Rosa, CA, to give the keynote speech. 10,000 people had come on short notice to see plants and seeds that would already be extinct had not someone lovingly collected and bred them.
Vandana Shiva, trained in quantum physics, became a seed saver and ecologist in 1982. She and her organization Navdanya have done a huge part of the work limiting the spread of GMOs into India. For her the attempts to impose GMOs on India is a war on life and the most recent wave of colonialism. She and the members of Navdanya learned from Gandhi's campaigns against the British - and as Gandhi chose the spinning wheel and salt, they chose the seed as the vessel of life and dedicated themselves to its protection.

It thinks that only the "haves" have rights and that the rest of us can be thrown away like garbage. I spoke to Eric Stoner, co-founder and editor to Waging Nonviolence, a source for news, analysis, and original reporting about nonviolent activism, as well as for discussion of the theory behind it. Also, Razia Ahmed and I spoke to Ali Gohar in Peshawar Pakistan about his group Just Peace and how they're reaching out to the communities along the Afghan-Pakistan border using a method of peace building through Jirga. And we have some audio from Saturday's rally and march in Chicago in protest against the war in Afghanistan that has now entered its 10 year.
