TITLE: Psychiatry's Human Rights Violations and Antipsychiatry
DESCRIPTION OF EVENT: As the first of four seminars, major human rights violations in psychiatry are critiqued. Also discussed are major misconceptions, myths and facts about antipsychiatry
This seminar features major reasons for dismantling psychiatry including its fraudulent diagnoses, discredited medical model of "mental illness", and harmful "treatments" such as psychiatric drugs and electroshock.
The seminar ends with a brief summary of antipsychiatry protests and conferences in Canada, the United States, and Europe.

TITLE: Electroshock: The Struggle to Ban "ECT"
DESCRIPTION OF EVENT: Electroshock ("Electroconvulsive Therapy/ECT") is the most 'controversial treatment' in psychiatry today.
This seminar deconstructs electroshock as a traumatic, memory destroying and brain-damaging procedure procedure that targets women and elderly people.
Several studies and shock survivor testimony that document ECT's horrific effects, and the growth of international resistance against "ECT" are also discussed.

TITLE: Psychiatric "Medication": Chemical Lobotomies/Chemical Prisons
DESCRIPTION OF EVENT: Millions of children, women and the elderly in Canada, the United States and Europe, are prescribed dangerous psychiatric drugs faudulently promoted as "safe and effective medication" in psychiatric facilities, prisons and the community. These drugs are frequently administered without informed consent. From an antipsychiatry/anti-oppression perspective, this seminar critiques many health-threatening and direct effects, including neurological disorders or brain damage, of the neuroleptics ("antipsychotics") and "antidepressants." It also discusses how people can withdraw safely from these neurotoxins. Several drug deaths of young people and recent inquests in Ontario are cited. Guest speaker and author Erick Fabris (Tranquil Prisons) critiques community treatment orders (outpatient forced drugging) as chemical prisons. The roles of psychiatry and multi-national drug companies ('Big Pharma') are denounced as unethical.

TITLE: A Radical Vision: Alternatives to Psychiatry and the "Mental Health System"
DESCRIPTION OF EVENT: A world without "mental health centres"? Without psychiatry? This seminar addresses these questions by discussing several existing community based, non-medical alternatives in Canada, the United States, and Europe These alternatives include Soteria House as a successful social experiment, Berlin's Runaway House, safe houses, supportive housing, drop-ins, self-help groups, and nonexistent but urgently needed withdrawal centres, healing houses, and co-ops. Obstacles to their acceptance and growth are critically discussed: psychiatry's medical model, mental health legislation, the myth of "mental illness'", public fear of "mental patients", bigotry in pro-psychiatry media. Possible ways to overcome them are explored.
Biographical note: Don Weitz is an antipsychiatry activist, psychiatric survivor, and human rights advocate. He is a member of the Coordinating Committee of the Coalition Against Psychiatric Assault (CAPA), and co-editor (with Dr. Bonnie Burstow) of Shrink Resistant: The Struggle Against Psychiatry in Canada. He continues speaking out against human rights violations in psychiatry and the "mental health system"; for many years he has been active in the international movement to ban electroshock.
Hollywood Stars "Horning" into Africa; Wall Street Occupied

"We want to believe that the mainstream media gets it right, but they play a propaganda role often." The same unchecked reporting that happened in Libya is now occurring in Syria. A lurid story about the Syrian government beheading an opposition activist was paraded by newspapers and major human rights organizations, until the activist resurfaced - alive. Phil warns about the Iraq wool being pulled over our eyes.
We hear similar complaints from Eritrean commentator Thomas Mountain, who takes issue with the manner in which Hollywood movie stars are busy "helping" refugees in Africa. Angelina Jolie, a goodwill ambassador who called for the bombing of Sudan, this time held a press conference to bring attention to the plight of 750,000 refugees in Somalia.
She didn't mention that her UN colleagues had cut food rations to 30% of minimum daily survival needs, and they also enable military conflict in that beleaguered country. In fact, the refugees in question had fled war, not starvation. Now, Angelina Jolie is focusing on Syrian refugees in Turkey, at a time when Turkey is threatening to attack Syria. When the Hollywood celebrities start surrounding your country, watch out!
Next up is "Ray" from Occupy Wall Street, who has "been in it since the beginning." Ray is an environmentalist who organizes against energy companies.
Lawyer Chris Black rounds out the program, with a follow-up to last week's unprecedented interview with Dr. Theogene Rutasingwa, whose recent confession builds upon previous accounts. The shooting down of the airliner carrying two African presidents, and immediate invasion of Rwanda by the RPF, so shook the Rwandan army that it proposed an unconditional surrender. The RPF rejected that offer, and swept into power at the expense of prolonging a bloody conflict. Black's client, acquitted of charges, faced persecution from the new Rwandan government despite his considerable work in sheltering civilians. "It's just a game. And he spent 11 years in prison."

Allen Thayer is the Assistant Director of the Public Management Program Center for Social Innovation (CSI) of the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is a graduate of Georgetown University and Columbia University. He also attended university in Indonesia.
Allen Thayer is called "the Ambassador" in certain circles because he also is a DJ of Brasilian Music.
Ambassador Thayer's collection of rare 45 old and especially new singles stunned everyone in the studio. His choice of music reflected themes of today's current events and hopes.

The use of migrant labour is nothing new and certainly nothing new in Canada. Yet the issue of migrant labour is rarely talked about. Many Canadians would be surprised to hear that hundreds of migrant workers come to Canada every year. David Camfield is a professor of labour at the University of Manitoba. David Camfield breaks down some of the history of migrant labour in Canada. David also covers how the system is structured and what kind of rights do migrant workers have.
