Rebecca Sanders is the Programming and Marketing Manager of the Midpeninsula Community Media Center in Palo Alto. She has a love of music matched by a tremendous very energetic spirit of reaching out to people. She is the host of her own TV show, American Songwriter, at the Midpeninsula Media Center which features local artists performing their own music. The Media Center won a national award last week for Overall Excellence in Public, Education and Government Access from the Alliance for Community Media (alliancecm.org). The Midpeninsula Media Center is located on San Antonio Road in Palo Alto near Charleston Road and their website is http://www.midpenmedia.org/. The Media Center provides training in TV Studio production and field video production to create content for five local access cable stations, to empower and to build community. The Headlines Sam Kriviak | CJSR, Edmonton -Natalya Rougas recently won her fight to qualify for EI sick leave benefits that she requested while on maternity leave after being diagnosed with breast cancer. This is a precedent setting case that will ensure thousands more people each year will be able to access the same benefits. -Two oil spills have occurred in Northern Alberta in three months. One of them lost almost 30,000 barrels of crude oil in the provinces largest spill in 36 years, impacting the health and functioning of First Nations communities nearby. -A recent federally commissioned assessment of water safety on First Nations reserves nationwide showed that 73% of drinking water systems on reserves are at moderate to high risk of being unsafe. Billions of dollars are required to begin to address the problem. -The Honouring the Waters Indigenous Water Forum took place in July to bring together Indigenous people from around the Great Lakes to address ongoing concerns about our relationship with water. Chief Dean Seyers was in attendance and spoke about the progress being made by Indigenous communities in the area. Files from NationTalk. Gary Gottfreidson and Woody Morrison discuss their experiences at the conference and the importance of maintaining traditional languages to preserve cultural knowledge.
