BSTF 866 - Hurricane Spectacular 09 - The Burning BUSH!

May 22, 2011, 7:22 a.m.
HURRICANE SPECTACULAR Chapter 9: "The Burning BUSH!" If you have to miss *any* of the HURRICANE SPECTACULARS, let it be THIS one! Seriously -- this one is much less structured and much more incoherent than the others. It's a mashed-up RASHOMON of possibilities, and some of the material is reused later to better effect. Hey, I'm honest, at least. The problem with this one is that I mainly used this episode to work through all the loose ends I had left to use before I got to the TITANIC BATTLE TO THE DEATH between George and his half-brother Jeb. That will be told in chapters 10 through, uh, uhhh, 12? Maybe 13? Anyhow, I can guarantee that at the end of chapter 10, ONE OF THE BUSH BROTHERS DIES. Very badly, too. And *much worse* shit happens to him in chapters 11, 12, and maybe 13, too. But I'm talking about chapter 10: "DEATHMATCH!" This is chapter 9: "THE BURNING BUSH!" Here's the thin gruel of a "plot": Jeb, going by his merc name "Snake," has been dropped into the Hurricane Katrina Zone on a mission to slay his evil half-brother George. Snake shakes down rattled, frightened storm victims for info about the renegade president, but the two Bush boys keep missing each other as they wander the tangled swamps. George, free of both his kidnapper and the treacherous hussy Michael Brown, is feeling footloose and fancy-free -- until he runs into a clutch of storm victims himself. George's helpless arrogance seals his fate as the ravaged, angry survivors respond to him not with fear but with righteous wrath... which eventually erupts in a flashpoint of violent mob vengeance. Hence the title. As for music, there's at least a great version of "Bad Moon Rising" by 16 Horsepower, some Peter, Paul, & Mary for the ones who are all folked up, "Roll the Bodies Over" by Stump (I think), and an oldtimey gospel hymn called "Echoes from the Burning Bush" -- for obvious reasons.

BSTF 865 - Hurricane Spectacular 08 - Brokedick Mountain

May 22, 2011, 7:04 a.m.
Tonight -- the HURRICANE SPECTACULAR, Chapter 8: "Brokedick Mountain" George's half-brother Jeb Robertson Bush, still agonizing about accepting the poison crown of the presidency, is dropped by helicopter into the Hurricane Katrina zone, ready to hunt down and slay the rogue George. Meanwhile, George and Michael Brown, continuing their rolling lovers' spat, still languish in the brutal clutches of the kidnapper Jack. As George regains consciousness from yet another savage beating, he witnesses Brown's ultimate betrayal. Realizing that Brown's loyalties have shifted from his shitty boyfriend George to Jack, the runaway president eludes his dozing postcoital kidnapper and strikes out on his own -- unaware that now brother Jeb is also roaming the bayous... with murder on his mind. Tonight's episode features chunks of Little Gruntpack, some Leon Russell, some Peter, Paul & Mary (!) for the folkies, and some unknown someone's terrific cover of Hank Williams' "Settin' the Woods on Fire"! Enjoy.

#168 -- Corporations vs. Schoolchildren

May 20, 2011, 4:10 p.m.
The intensifying attack on public schools has 2 prongs. One is the campaign to turn the schools over to for-profit corporations. GLEN FORD and MUMIA ABU-JAMAL analyze the scam brilliantly. The second prong is consumer advertising and marketing to a captive audience of students within the schools. Many schools are so under-funded that they feel they have to let the marketers in. This segment rebroadcasts portions of a nice Canadian documentary, "Corporations in the Classroom."
