#162 -- Renegades 2 - Prostitutes: Pioneers of Women's Lib

April 8, 2011, 10:02 p.m.
Many rights and freedoms enjoyed today by US women (and their male friends) were won for them--not by feminists--but by 19th & early-20th century prostitutes & madams. These include the right to own property; to acquire wealth; to dance, smoke, and drink in public; to wear attractive clothing; to give or receive oral sex; to have interracial intimacy; and to use contraceptives. A rollicking good story, well-told by historian Thaddeus Russell.

April 8, 2011, 1:12 p.m.
In the first half hour, Elizabeth Rodriquez discussed the secret war on the Mexican American border. She shared the history of the conflict and what the mainstream media has failed to report. In the second hour, author Andy Couturier, "A Different Kind of Luxury, Japanese Lessons in Simple Living and Inner Abundance", discussed the philosophy behind a truly fulfilling life. Among the themes discussed were being a consumed in a consumer culture, quantum physics and energy, life lived intimately connected to the land, the quality of time well spent, being free of working for a wage, the search for a more reasonable and affectionate way to be in the world, the limitations of a group-oriented society, the pleasure of using one's hands to provide for one's needs, the satisfaction of living a life of few desires and reduced consumption, a reverence for the natural world, and an awareness of death and impermanence. One of the individuals interviewed in his book, "Atsuko Watannabe, an anti-nuclear activist, spoke about the impact of the nuclear meltdown in Northern Japan and what we can do to assist the victims. Finally, Couturier, discussed writing workshops he is conducting based on his book, "Writing Open the Mind: Tapping the Subconscious to Free the Writing and the Writer in Santa Cruz and Berkeley. Nuclear Risks, Real & Perceived: Breakthrough Institute's Jesse Jenkins

April 8, 2011, 8:41 a.m.
The meltdown at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima is enlivening discussions on alternative energy around dinner tables and across debate platforms everywhere. People who call themselvesenvironmentalists tend to agree on the need to curtail human reliance on fossil fuels, including the pervasive use of coal in generating electricity. That same level of consensus cannot be found, however, on the topic of nuclear power. Nuclear energy and environmentalism have traditionally been thought of as incongruous, yet our guest today on Sea Change Radio offers a logic to solve the paradox. Jesse Jenkins, the Director of Energy and Climate Policy at the Breakthrough Institute, a think tank that advocates for innovative solutions to energy and climate challenges, believes that nuclear power ought to be a significant part of a more sustainable energy plan. Listen as Sea Change Radio host Alex Wise asks him about the risks, real and perceived, and how the catastrophe in Japan affects his views on nuclear power.
