Israeli Campaigner For Justice For Palestinians

Jan. 29, 2011, 3:47 p.m.
Since 1967, more than 24,000 Palestinian homes have been demolished in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Gaza by the Israeli forces, bringing untold misery to countless Palestinians. Jeff Halper has led a campaign against this abuse through the organization ICAHD. As ICAHD witnessed the brutalities of the Occupation, it expanded its resistance activities to other areas – land expropriation, settlement expansion, by-pass road construction, policies of “closure” and “separation,” the mass uprooting of fruit and olive trees, the Separation Barrier/Wall, the siege of Gaza and more. Building Bridges hosts, in studio ICAHD’s Jeff Halper, an Israeli Jew who fearlessly criticizes the state of Israel and has, as a result, been arrested many times, including recently after he sailed into Gaza on a relief boat, for a discussion of ideas & international advocacy to end the Occupation altogether & for a “Free, Free Palestine.”

#536 - Beyond Hierarchy

Jan. 28, 2011, 10:15 p.m.
This week we mark a year since Lyn's last new episode by deviating from our usual format. Instead of a few separate speeches, an audio collage of speakers, some with backing music. The most prominent voice is Noam Chomsky's, but he is supported by a couple of dozen others from earlier episodes and other sources. The overarching theme is the need to question the existing reality, especially to shake off the hierarchical institutions and prejudices of the past, and embrace a new spirit of autonomy that respects the individual.

#152 -- Military Rape

Jan. 28, 2011, 1:16 p.m.
Military Sexual Trauma--rape of one US soldier by another--is epidemic. Victims who report the assault are persecuted and denied care; their rapists are promoted; and the Pentagon does nothing to fix the problem. In detail, journalist DAHR JAMAIL discusses the problem and one of its causes: New techniques of military training "dehumanize" soldiers much more than training in the past. Then journalist ROBERT FISK, speaking in 2008, traces GIs' newfound love of torture to the same cause.

Bridging the Access Gap

Jan. 28, 2011, 11:38 a.m.
Ten million people die each year from diseases that have available cures. Nearly 1/3 of all people do not have regular access to essential medicines, and in the poorest parts of Africa and Asia this figure rises to over 50%. Udo Shuklenk, a bioethicist and Professor at Queens’ University has written,“In the real world there is no such thing as a fixed local standard of care. Rather, the local standard of care in, for example, India, is a standard of care determined by the prices set by Western pharmaceutical multinationals.” Indeed, the reasons for lack of access to essential medicines are complex, but much of it boils down to price. On today’s episode of the HJRC we speak with Rachel Kiddell-Monroe, President of Universities Allied for Essential Medicines, about what role Universities can play in bridging the access gap. Listen here.
