12/29/10 edition

Dec. 29, 2010, 4:23 p.m.
Okay, long-awaited might be a stretch; I was just up in this mother-effer a month or so ago, I think. Still, Tommy's currently living the life of a first-world squatter, huddling around a vent in Boston's airport, waiting for the gods of travel to grant him a flight back to the River City. So you're stuck with me closing out your industrial-driven eclectic canine show of choice! I think I have some good stuff lined up. Thanks for listening...

Journalist Ali Abunimah speaks at the Palestine Solidarity Conference in Stuttgart

Dec. 29, 2010, 3:51 p.m.
Palestinian-American journalist Ali Abunimah (host of electronicintifada.net) speaks at the Palestine Solidarity Conference in Stuttgart, November 27, 2010. He explains why the so-called "two-state solution" leaves Israel's brutal oppression and injustice in place. This stems from falsely ignoring the power imbalance. An analogous approach in mid-19th-century USA would be to label the slavery issue as the "black-white conflict." We discuss further the significance of holding this meeting in Germany. Briefly, it represents a small crack, at least, in the German obeisance to “The Auschwitz Bludgeon.” If your internet speed will support it, the talk may be viewed independently at: www.mefeedia.com/watch/34098557 Ken's introduction is laid out in the script (below).

Hope for an Environmental Revolution in Northern Florida, USA

Dec. 28, 2010, 12:55 p.m.
Joy Ezell founded Hope in Taylor County Florida, an environmental group focusing on industrial pollution and public health, because she had come upon a health damaging problem in her community. Joy discovered that the Buckeye Cellulose factory, located in Perry, Florida (now known as Buckeye Technologies, Inc.), had poisoned the ground water throughout an extensive region in northern Florida. Buckeye produces bleached cellulose. Chlorine bleaching of paper pulp produces dioxins, which are discharged by the factory into the Fenholloway River. Working to warn the public about the dangers of drinking the contaminated water from residential wells, this organization has battled bad government at all levels. Joy is hopeful that an environmental revolution is not far off.

Med students urge province to Put Food in the Budget

Dec. 27, 2010, 1:34 p.m.
In the province of Ontario, an individual living on social assistance receives 592$/month. This sum must cover the cost of food, rent, transportation and all other living expenses. Earlier this month, 20 McMaster medical students did the math and concluded that this amount is not enough to live with health and dignity. To demonstrate the inadequacy of social assistance in Ontario, and to demand an immediate 100$ increase in social assistance as a first step toward adequate income, they relied on a food bank diet for 5 days. Their experiences are documented http://mcmastermedicalstudentsdtmc.posterous.com/ . Across the province of Ontario, 1000 people have undertaken this challenge as part of the Put Food in the Budget Campaign. Recently the provincial government announced an 18 month review of social assistance rates in Ontario, a move which has been met with much criticism. On the December 13th episode of Health Justice Radio, we speak with medical students Denali Kerr and Roselyn Wilson about their experiences during the challenge.
