Bruce Gagnon is coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space. We overcome objections, find local activism, search for Peace - & then hear the same calls for military conversion in Great Britain.

But that's leavened with heaping dollops of Stan Freberg, a little Brian Doyle Murray (a particular weakness of mine), some Mason Williams, and... aw, hell, it's CHRISTMAS!

Challenging Tarek Fatah
Dec. 25, 2010, 11:56 a.m.
Part one of this weekâs radio613 takes a critical look at a recent radio interview with Muslim Canadian Congress founder Tarek Fatah. The interview, featured on CBCâs The Current, explores the thesis in Fatahâs new book âThe Jew Is Not My Enemyâ. The author claims that his bookâs purpose is to challenge anti-Semitism in Muslim communities. Our analysis, however, suggests that Fatahâs unwillingness to acknowledge the realities of Islamophobia strongly discredits Fatahâs work and hinders the work of confronting anti-Semitism and building unity between Jews and Muslims.
Part two of the show features Malcahâs reading of âGoslin Dayâ by Avram Davidson from Wandering Stars: An Anthology of Jewish Fantasy & Science Fiction.
Music this week from Brother Ali (âGood Lordâ) and The Narcicyst (âPHATWAâ).
Georgia Prison Labor Strike
Dec. 25, 2010, 11:38 a.m.
On December 9, thousands of men, from Augusta, Baldwin, Hancock, Hays, Macon, Smith and Telfair State Prisons went on strike to press the Georgia Department of Corrections (âDOCâ) to stop treating them like slaves and institute programs that address their basic human rights.
Some of their demands are: 1) a living wage for work 2) educational opportunities; 3) decent health care; 4)an end to cruel & unusual punishments; 5) decent living conditions; 6) nutritional meals; 7) vocational and self-improvement opportunities; 8) access to families; and 9) just parole decisions. The Georgia prisoners refused to work, stopping all activities, in a peaceful
protest for their human rights. This is a heroic act of resistance to inhuman prison conditions and racism.

Prison Labor: Made in the U.S.A.
Produced by Free Speech Radio News
with reporter Karen Miller
Prison labor is every US Corporation's dream: cheap labor, no sick leave, no time off, no holidays and employees that can be easily replaced. For human rights activists however, it's a nightmare for the very same reasons - but on the other side of the coin: forced labor, no unions, low pay and no protection for employees. The US has used or currently uses prison labor for anything from holiday coffee for Starbucks, cutting airplane components for Boeing, Game Boys for Nintendo, equipment for the war in Iraq, shrink wrapping mousses for Microsoft, making dentures, down to sewing lingerie for Victoria's Secrets. It's a multi-billion dollar business.

Frank Zappa would have turned 70 this month. His music and his stand on free speech and against censorship resonates today as our society debates the cultural rules governing language, journalism, and state secrets. This 30 minute program is a personal tribute to Zappa; the producers acknowledge the influence he had on their lives down through the decades. THICKLY SETTLED is a weekly radio program about civilization and citizenship produced by I.B.I.S. Radio and broadcast on WMBR, Cambridge.
