Labor Express for 12-13-10

Dec. 14, 2010, 8:55 p.m.
This is the full 12-13-10 episode of the Labor Express Radio program. One unique aspect of our coverage of worker’s issues over the past year here on Labor Express Radio has been the number of stories we have aired regarding environmental issues in working class communities. As we approach the end of 2010, and as world leaders discuss climate change policy in Cancun at COP 16, we will air today one more episode focused on this issue. First, we will hear from one of Chicago’s oldest and most important environmental justice organizations, LVEJO or the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization. They we will talk about their critique of the negotiations in Cancun and of some of the work they are currently engaged in here in Chicago. And later in the program we will hear from rail yard workers, members of Teamsters Local 705, who are worried about the effects of rail yard pollution on their members and the working class communities that surround the yards. Labor Express Radio is Chicago's only English language labor news and current affairs radio program. News for working people, by working people. Labor Express Radio airs every Monday morning at 10:00 AM on Chicago's Sound Alliance, WLUW, 88.7 FM. Electricity That Sucks

Dec. 14, 2010, 11:30 a.m.
Vampire power refers to the electricity electronic appliances and devices waste just by being plugged in, even when they're switched off. Did you know that when you point your remote control at the TV to turn it off for the night, that appliance isn’t really off? In the middle of the night, at the witching hour, your TV, in standby mode, continues to suck power, like a sinister vampire draining electricity off the grid while you sleep blithely unaware. This purely wasteful electricity consumption is said to amount to around 10% of residential use for the average American household. The good news is that the solution is very straightforward. By utilizing technological innovations that already exist, and changing some simple everyday habits, we can put a stake in the heart of this problem. This week on Sea Change Radio we talk with Maria Vargas who explains how the federal government’s Energy Star program is trying to raise awareness and promote more responsible energy consumption, and with Alan Meier, senior scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a faculty member at UC Davis and the foremost authority on standby power. While this broadcast focuses more on the progress being made by the Energy Star program, critics assert that the program's binary "yes" or "no" system is less helpful to consumers than graded scale systems like in Europe - and also that the program certifies too many products.

Dec. 13, 2010, 6:41 p.m.
Dorothy Fadiman has been producing award-winning social change media since 1976, and her honors include an Oscar nomination and an Emmy. In this interview, Dorothy Fadiman talks about her latest documentary, "RECLAIMING THEIR VOICES: The Native American vote in New Mexico & Beyond" which captures personal stories about Native American history in New Mexico and particularly voting issues which recently impacted the community. Subjects focus on social justice and human rights and range from the light of Spirit in every faith (Radiance: The Experience of Light) to progressive education that honors children's natural knowing (Why Do these Kids Love School?) to the extraordinary healing journey of a woman witha spinal cord injury (Moment by Moment: The Healing Journey of Molly Hale). She has produced several series, including a trilogy on abortion rights (From the Back-Alleys to the Supreme Court) — and a five-part series on AIDS in Africa (Seeds of Hope). Her most recent films include "STEALING AMERICA: Vote by Vote," which examines the integrity of a decade of U.S. elections and "RECLAIMING THEIR VOICES: The Native American Vote in New Mexico & Beyond." Future projects include a documentary focusing on the disenfranchisement of Native American voters. PRODUCING with PASSION follows her career and offers specific suggestions, based on what she has learned, for independent filmmakers to use in their work as they find their unique voices through filmmaking.
