Transforming Power - Judy Rebick

Nov. 13, 2010, 11:19 a.m.
Transforming Power - From the personal to the Political. The newest book release from Judy Rebick. Rebick is a long time Activist/ Writer/and Broadcaster. She was one of the people behind the start of Rabble, an on line independent media outlet, in fact one of the first web magazines to engage the power of the web for activism. Judy has traveled the world, which has given her a rare glimpse of our Current Situation. She sees the need for a new approach for political action. A grass roots led idea on how to defend Mother Earth. After Copenhagen failed to manifest significant social policy to deal with Climate Change, 30,000 people from over 100 Countries took back control of the decision making, by forming a Peoples Conference in Bolivia. There they formed new ideas to protect Mother Earth from Capitalism. Judy was one of those people. Transforming Power was the result and hope from that movement. This audio was recorded from a talk she gave to the Spirit of Red Hill lecture series in Hamilton. Recorded November 3rd 2010.

#525 - Cannabis

Nov. 12, 2010, 7:05 p.m.
Last week's episode looked at how man made toxic chemicals have proved more destructive for humans than initially anticipated. This week, by contrast, we look at the effects of chemicals that occur naturally in plants, and may be more therapeutic than generally recognised. In our first hour, Claudia Little, a medical marijuana activist looks at some of the innumerable therapeutic uses of this plant, with a history of medical use going back several thousands of years. Our second hour features Michael Pollan speaking on the contents of his book Cannabis, Forgetting, and the Botany of Desire, which widens our focus to look at how plants have co-evolved to fulfil useful functions to other life forms.

Nov. 12, 2010, 3:43 p.m.
Baghdad, yesterday: The Secular "Iraqya" bloc walked out of the Iraqi parliament as other factions formed a nominal government and reappointed Prime Minister Maliki for another term. Many Sunni residents fear he is too close to Iran and that they may have to take up arms again. Baghdad, Wednesday: Eleven roadside bombs detonated within an hour of each other in three predominantly Christian areas of central Baghdad early Wednesday. Four of the blasts hit houses belonging to Christians, and two mortar rounds also struck Christian enclaves of the predominantly Sunni neighborhood of Dora in south Baghdad. Baghdad, Wednesday: Eight people were wounded Wednesday in a rocket attack against the fortified Green Zone in central Baghdad, according to a security source reporting to Aswat al-Iraq news agency. The rockets scored direct hits in the "residential" section of the occupied Green Zone. Kirkuk, Thursday: Unknown resistance fighters attacked a US military airbase in North Eastern Iraq, according to Iraqi security officials. The base, located near Kirkuk, was hit by mortar fire and two Katusha rockets early on Thursday, police chief Sarhad Ghader told Fars news agency. Mr Barrack Obama, does this sound to you like the surge worked? Does this sound like a viable plan to copy in Afghanistan? Three more NATO soldiers dies there Wednesday and Thursday. Now is the time to get off this treadmill of death-bring all the troops home TODAY!

Nov. 12, 2010, 12:14 p.m.
The whole National Security establishment--except President Kennedy--clamored for war against the Soviet Union. They nearly got one in 1962, when a Soviet missile base was discovered in Cuba. Losing control of the situation, JFK begged Soviet Premier Khrushchev for help in averting war--and got it. Afterwards, JFK fought hard for disarmament. JIM DOUGLASS tells this fascinating story. Plus passages from JFK's great "Peace" speech of 6-10-1963.
