Cautionary words from Senator Woo

May 5, 2023, 1:17 a.m.
There is currently in Canada a fevered political environment in which parties make great noise about opposing/confronting/standing up to China. Unsubstantiated claims from unnamed sources that China has interfered with or tried to influence elected officials have already damaged careers and reputations of Chinese-Canadian leaders. Now there is a demand from some quarters that we in Canada should bring in laws establishing foreign agents registration, such as those of the U.S. and Australia. There's no evidence that those countries are safer or more free. And in the case of the U.S., which has had "agent registration" since 1938, searches for foreign agents have led on occasion to bouts of political hysteria and McCarthyism.

May 4, 2023, 6:41 p.m.
Sonic Café changing your perception of reality one episode at a time, ahh yeah, so hey that was Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders from 2016’s Alone album, so what’s goin on anyway? I’m Scott Clark and this is episode 337. Our families they’re all unique, with different backgrounds, interests and careers that all come together for holidays, weddings and the like. The one solid thing we can say about every family is each family has at least one stupid person. So who’s the dumb one in your family? Anyway, comedian Tom Segura drops by to explain this all to real family dynamic. Then later you’ll want to take notes as the Sonic Café explains quantum mechanics in sixty-seconds. Renowned physicist Brian Cox is here to lay it on us baby. We’re also introducing another semi-regular segment to show this time, so listen for Sonic Café disco love featuring KC & The Sunshine Band from 1975. All that is wrapped in a music mix spanning 47 years, listen for Shovels & Rope, Bleachers, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Moby, The Soul Searches and many more. All straight ahead as the Sonic Café comes to grip with the fact that every family has at least, ah one stupid person, ahh from 2021 this is Cheap Trick and we’re the Sonic Café.

The Battle against state-legislated prohibitions of BDS, and a recent Congressional shift away from US aid to Israel

May 4, 2023, 6:08 p.m.
The most successful weapon of resistance used by the Palestinians in their asymmetrical struggle with Israel has been the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS). So successful, that Israel is spending millions of dollars to destroy it through a state legislative campaign to make BDS illegal in every state in the Union . This morning, in an Electronic Intifada podcast, we examine this assault on Palestinian resistance as well as an assault on the First Amendment to the US Constitution. Nora Barrows Friedman and Asa Winslett moderate the podcast. But first, from Mondoweiss: Fourteen Congresspeople, led by Bernie Sanders and Jamaal Bowman, sent a historic letter to President Biden and his secretary of state calling on them to “undertake a shift in U.S. policy” in recognition of the Israel's “systemic violence against Palestinians” and begin to condition aid to Israel to assure that all future foreign assistance “is not used in support of gross violations of human rights.” The letter (signed by the 14) establishes a firm grounding for Palestinian human rights inside the Congress. It includes the Squad and more traditional progressives, but also new reps Summer Lee of Pittsburgh and Delia Ramirez of Chicago. The 14 are part of the “sea change” in U.S. attitudes towards Israel, which its own advocates acknowledge. The letter’s civil-society supporters include 35 diverse progressive groups, plus a statement from several Jewish community leaders that numbers some from the liberal Zionist movement. Their presence demonstrates the momentous shift that is taking place inside the Jewish community, away from support for Israel. ...

Forgotten History of the US War on Korea

May 2, 2023, 10:46 p.m.
On Wednesday, April 26, 2023, Joe Biden pledged to deploy nuclear armed submarines to South Korea for the first time in 40 years. The US would involve officials from South Korea in nuclear planning operations targeting North Korea. How has it come to this, what is the experience of people on the ground in North and South Korea. And why do we know so little about the US War on Korea, that began 70 years ago, and never ended in a peace agreement. I had the moving experience to record one of the few living veterans of that war. The great late folk singer and story teller Utah Phillips said that being drafted and stationed in Korea changed his life. Jeff Blankfort is a much traveled journalist and photographer. He did in depth research on the origin of the war and invited Christine Ahn to be the guest on his program on August 23, 2017. Thanks to Jeff Blankfort and KZYX for sharing part of the one hour program Christine Ahn is founder and executive director of Women Cross DMZ, a global movement of women mobilizing to end the Korean War. Christine is also the coordinator of the campaign Korea Peace Now! She has addressed the UN, Congress and the National Human Rights Commission in South Korea. This program was recorded in August 2017. Now - 6 years later - Christine Ahn gives an update as guest on the April 28, 2023, edition of Democracy Now.
