#520 - Education and Its Discontents
Oct. 9, 2010, 1:30 a.m.
We examine whether US schools and colleges exist to serve the greater good of society or to serve the greater wealth of CEOs by creating a pliable underclass who can be moulded according to the whims of capital. We recall Lyn Gerry's original mission for the show, and contrast that with the US education system. We start with two episodes of Third Paradigm about college financing, and read from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. In our second hour, we compare Jonathan Kozol's analysis of US schools with the similar, but more radical critique by John Taylor Gatto.

#136 -- BP Then and Now
Oct. 8, 2010, 1:07 p.m.
BP creates disasters--political as well as ecological--which the US government then makes worse.
ANNE McCLINTOCK details how the govt. is reducing BP's legal liability for the Gulf disaster by sinking the oil with millions of gallons of the extremely toxic "dispersant" Corexit--compounding the damage.
In 1953, to save BP from having to pay any royalties for Iran's oil, the US overthrew Iran's democratic, pro-US government and installed the Shah as dictator. WILLIAM ENGDAHL tells the story.

Migrant workers in Ontario embark on historic "Pilgrimage to Freedom" this Thanksgiving
Oct. 8, 2010, 8:41 a.m.
Every day, migrant workers are met with preventable dangers at work. Ralston White and Paul Roach were two Jamaican men who had been working under the Canadian Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program at Filsinger Farms near Owen Sound, Ontario. In September they became the latest victims of clear workplace health and safety violations. We hear more from Tzazna Miranda Leal with Justicia For Migrant Workers about these tragic fatalities.
Migrant agricultural workers like the late Ralston and Paul, grow, harvest and process much of the food Canadians enjoy, but instead of feasting at the dinner table this coming Thanksgiving weekend, a great many of migrant workers from Ontario fields, farms and factories will undertake Justicia For Migrant Workers' first âPilgrimage to Freedomâ. This is an arduous march of more than 50 kilometres from Leamington to the Windsor's Monument for Freedom, dedicated to the underground railroad that brought slaves to freedom in Canada. Tzazna also talks about why.

Local Heat, Beyond the Wood Stove
Oct. 8, 2010, 8:08 a.m.
In northeastern states, the oil and propane used to heat buildings represent a key vulnerability to the triple challenges of peak oil, climate change, and economic collapse. The natural, relocalizing solution is to use wood heat.
District heating, on a small or large scale gives the convenience of thermostatically controlled heat, with all the benefits of wood as a fuel--but no fuel to lug into or ash to take out of each building.

It's Your Health
Oct. 8, 2010, 3:27 a.m.
Letâs face it: everyoneâs getting older. But millions of women, raised to believe that success and happiness are based on their intelligence and accomplishments, face an unexpected challenge: the physical realities of aging. If looks are not supposed to matter, why do so many women panic as their appearance changes?
Their dilemma stems from two opposing societal views of beauty which lead to two different approaches to aging. Should women simply grow old naturally since their looks donât define them, or should they fight the signs of aging since beauty and youth are their currency and power? This Beauty Paradox leaves many women feeling stuck.
Face It, by Vivian Diller, Ph.D., is a psychological guide to help women deal with the emotions brought on by their changing appearances. As a model turned psychotherapist, Diller has had the opportunity to examine the world of beauty from two very different vantage points. This unique perspective helped her develop a six-step program that begins with recognizing âuh-ohâ moments that reveal the reality of changing looks, and goes on to identify the masks used to cover deeper issues and define the role beauty plays in a womanâs life, and ends with bidding adieu to old definitions of beauty, so women can enjoy their appearanceâat any age!

While the medical community has succeeded in helping more women survive for 15, 20, 30 years and longer after a breast cancer diagnosis, few experts have focused on the sexual health and well-being of women survivors.
Two-time breast cancer survivor Gina Maisano says when women complete their treatment, they are often left with physical and emotional scars; poor body image; side effects that alter appearance, libido, and sexual enjoyment; and partners who may need help regaining interest.
In a groundbreaking new book called Intimacy after Breast Cancer (Square One Publishers, 2010), Maisano offers fellow survivors strategies to reclaim their looks, confidence, and sexual health so they can enjoy a fulfilling love life.
Maisano shares 7 ways to reclaim your sensual self, and can also discuss:
Post-traumatic stress disorder -- a hidden epidemic among breast cancer survivors
Medications and conditions that affect libido and sexual enjoyment in survivors
Why women gain, rather than lose, weight following chemo -- and how to reverse it
How to help with your partner's guilt, fear, loss of libido, and other intimacy issues
Real-life stories of survivors and their battle to recover their sexual lives
