UK jury: Activists' destruction of weapons factory justified

After Israel launched its deadly attack on Gaza in December 2009, anti-war activists broke into a British arms factory, smashed up equipment worth $300,000, and waited for the police to arrest them. The factory was known to produce bomb release mechanisms for the Israeli military. The activists were brought to trial, and in late June of this year a British jury acquitted them. We spoke with Chris Osmond, who helped with the action, to find out more.

Castro and The 26th of July Movement

On this day some 57 years ago, Fidel Castro began his infamous "26th of July Movement," or M-26-7, a movement designed to overthrow the dictatorship of Fulgenico Batista. The date commemorates the day on which Castro and about 200 young Cuban rebels attacked the Moncada army barracks at Santiago, Cuba. The effort was a futile one, and most of the attackers were killed but Fidel and his brother Raul managed to escape. Months later they gave themselves up to stop Batista's police from torturing people in Santiago who were accused of being part of their anti-government campaign.

Lynne Stewart's Persecution

July 24, 2010, 3:49 p.m.
70 year old attorney Lynne Stewart, was resentenced to 10 years in prison by Manhattan District Court Judge Koeltl, after an appeals court ruled that her original 28 month prison term was too light. As the 10 year sentence was pronounced attorney Stewart’s supporters, who packed the large overflow courtroom gasped in disbelief and dismay, sobs were audible. Attorney Stewart, visibly shaken rose slowly “I’m somewhat stunned, Judge, by the swift change in my outlook,” she said. “We will continue to struggle on to take all available options to do what we need to do to change this.” The sentence was the latest grim chapter where the government has used attorney Stewart to send a chilling message to the legal community to be wary of representation of defendants whom it distains the views of. We’ll bring you excerpts of the reactions to the resentencing with Stewart’s attorney, family & supporters – who vow to intensify their efforts to Free Lynne Stewart.

Launch of the Campaign Against the Deportion of Odette Sefuko

Odette Sefuko fled the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) via Uganda in fear of her life five years ago and came to England to claim asylum. The Home Office have rejected her claim, (now being reviewed by the European Court). The Home Office refuse to accept Odette is Congolese, despite reputable evidence.
