Causes of the Cancer Epidemic in New York State, USA

June 27, 2010, 12:03 p.m.
Dr. Sherman has practiced medicine for several decades. Her patients were predominantly workers exposed to chemicals and suffering adverse effects of the exposure. Dr. Sherman has thought carefully about the causes of excessively high cancer incidence in New York State. Her well supported position is that New York is downwind and downstream from a very large number of pollution sources. New York State is downwind from a large number of smokestacks that emit know and suspected human carcinogens in large quantities. These industrial facilities are virtually unregulated as a result of deficient enforcement efforts by US EPA and the state regulatory agencies, self reporting of emissions and prior notice of infrequent stack testing. New York State is down wind from a considerable number of nuclear power facilities. New York State, especially the St. Lawrence River Valley is down stream from the entire Great Lakes drainage basin. The fish in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River are heavily contaminated with dioxins and other persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The New York State Department of Health publishes an advisory document on chemicals in sport fish and game. It is recommended that girls and women of child bearing age consume no fish from Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. The vast number of industries located in the drainage basin of the Great Lakes have poorly regulated limitations on their waste water discharges due to the self reporting and deficiencies of enforcement described above. Dr. Sherman describes the St. Lawrence River as the sewer for the waste water discharge pollutants and the vast quantity of pollution that deposits into the Great Lakes drainage basin from the polluted air. Dr. Sherman will be an expert panelist on Cancer Action NY's upcoming tele news conference on the subject of grassroots efforts to reduce the exposure of Americans to carcinogenic POPs that contaminate all animal fat produced and marketed in the United States. (see media advisory on Cancer Action NY website: www.canceractionny.org) Dr. Sherman makes the very important point that we can not expect the federal and state governments, which exist under the undue influence of many corporate overlords, to do anything substantial about reducing the public's exposure to POPs. Our tele news conference focuses on efforts to educate on the subject of exposure reduction at the local level in New York State.

#505 - The Matrix Deconstructed

June 26, 2010, 5:47 a.m.
This week's show attempts to deconstruct the matrix of illusion that surrounds money and economics that is used to disorientate citizens and keep them working hard for their corporate masters. The first part is a speech by cognitive linguist, George Lakoff, entitled "Moral Politics". He explains the nature of metaphor and presents two contrasting approaches to parenthood, the "Strict Father" and the "Nurturing parent" models, linking these to Republican v. Democratic politics in US. I present some information I've uncovered about "economic literacy", and how business leaders used it to promote some of the worldview that Lakoff refers to as the "Strict Father" model. The second hour revisits Lyn Gerry's reading of Richard K. Moore's "Escaping The Matrix" essay from episode #87, deconstructing the economic and political agenda of the 1980's in US/UK and beyond. We conclude with another lively deconstruction, by economist Michael Hudson, likening the FIRE (Finance, Insurance & Real Estate) sector to a parasite that lives on the host of the productive economy. Most obviously, it sucks money from it, less remarked upon, it numbs the brain of the body politic, through control of mass media, to present itself as essential to the health of its prey, the real economy.

#121 -- David Ray Griffin on 9/11 & Afghanistan (2)

June 25, 2010, 11:37 a.m.
Griffin continues to demolish the Official Story of 9/11. This week he shows that cell-phone calls to passengers' relatives could not have been made from the 4 flights--as the FBI also has concluded. We know of hijackers & boxcutters only from these faked calls. In fact, Griffin argues, no good evidence has been made public that any highjackings occurred, and some evidence indicates that none did. Of the 8 pilots, NOT ONE entered the "Hijacking-in-Progress" code ("7500") into the transponder.
