Low Income Needs Asasessment in Skagit County

Skagit County is a leader in Washington State in studying the needs of it's low income population. Skagit County Community Action Agency commissions this study every 4 years in an effort to direct program development and collect data that helps to secure funding. In today's program, Karen Parnell, Deputy Director for SCCAA and Greg Winter, a consultant with Cornerstone Strategies in Bellingham discuss the recently completed Low Income Needs Assessment for 2009. Their findings shed light onto how the current recession is affecting the most vulnerable in our community and identify stresses that might be predicted from budget cuts.

Lifelong human rights' activist and writer, Peter Lippman has spent many years researching human rights issues in eastern Europe, as well as Israel/Palestine and Latin America. He has been traveling to Bosnia and other parts of the former Yugoslavia since 1981, lived in northern Serbia for a year, and speaks fluent "Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian." The Advocacy Project - a Wash. DC based NGO - sent Peter to Bosnia, Kosovo, Guatemala, and Ecuador to research and report on grassroots human rights campaigns. In the last few years he has been working on a book about post-war Bosnia.

According to Dr. Stephen Bezruchka, emergency room physician and professor in Population Health Studies at the University of Washington, healthcare does not make us healthy. The results of much research show that what determines the health of a society is related to the degree of equality in that society. Our growing disparity between the rich and poor, and lack of public policies to to assure well being to pregnant mothers and young children is the reason we are falling behind other developed countries.

They give the impact on our electoral system. Will Skagit County get a Spanish ballot as required by law if a language group reaches 5% of the total population? If per the census Washington State is allotted a 10th Congress person, who does the redistricting and how is it done? Also joining Speak up!
