Last Sunday was devoted to your mother. And Heaven help you, if you didn’t remember! If you did forget however, here are a few facts to keep in mind for the next mother’s day. Our current celebration actually originates from a woman who wrote what is arguably the most famous war music of all time, The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Her name was Julia Ward Howe. In 1872 Julia Howe started our current mother’s day tradition, specifically dedicated to world peace because she had become so distraught by the death and carnage of the Civil War.

Philippine elections 2010: Voting Amid Violence & Corruption

Cynthia Palmaria is co-founder of GABRIELA Ontario, and provides us with a comprehensive overview of the goings on in the time leading up to the May 10, 2010 Philippines general election. She speaks about several of the controversies during election time this time around, updates us with recent news from international election observers of the People's International Observer's Mission (many of which are Canadian), and criticizes the Gloria-Macapagal Arroyo government of occupation for heightened state repression, political killings, and other injustices during election time. Special focus is made on two progressive partylist groups running who are amongst the several partylists that have candidates that are actually not for the rich and are dedicated to combating the grinding poverty in the Philippines: GABRIELA Women's Party and Bayan Muna. GABRIELA Ontario is a grassroots Filipina-driven feminist and anti-imperialist migrant justice organization based in Toronto.
