Diasporic Music on Uhuru Radio

Norman (Otis) Richmond a.k.a. Jalali talks live with Randy Weston. Weston recorded his album, âUhuru Afrikaâ 50 years ago. The apartheid state of South Africa banned this album because of its title. Uhuru means âfreedomâ in Swahili, and this term sent chills down the spines of the rulers of the apartheid state. For many years the South African government banned any record or book with the word âfreedomâ in it. Uhuru was also the term that was used by Dedan Kimathi and the Land and Freedom Army a.k.a. Mau Maus. Gerald Horne, a frequent quest on Diasporic Music has a new volume, âMau Mau in Harlem? The U.S. and the Liberation of Kenya.â Randy Weston, born in Brooklyn, New York in 1926, didn't have to travel far to hear the early jazz giants that were to influence him. Though Weston cites Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Art Tatum, and of course, Duke Ellington as his other piano heroes, it was Thelonious Monk who had the greatest impact. "He was the most original I ever heard," Weston remembers. "He played like they must have played in Egypt 5000 years ago." Randy Weston has never failed to make the connections between African and African-American music. His dedication is due in large part to his father, Frank Edward Weston, who told his son that he was, "an African born in America." "He told me I had to learn about myself and about him and about my grandparents," Weston said in an interview, "and the only way to do it was I'd have to go back to the Motherland one day." In the late 60's, Weston left the country. But instead of moving to Europe like so many of his contemporaries, Weston went to Africa. Though he settled in Morocco, he traveled throughout the continent tasting the musical fruits of other nations. One of his most memorable experiences was the 1977 Nigerian festival, which drew artists from 60 cultures. "At the end," Weston says, "we all realized that our music was different but the same, because if you take out the African elements of bossa nova, samba, jazz, blues, you have nothing.......... An excellent panel discussion for Black History Month featuring David Austin of the Alfie Roberts Institute, Khalid Elgazzar (legal counsel for Abousfian Abdelrazik) and Maria Forti of Project Fly Home. Austin described how black organisers working in Montreal in the 1970s had been put under surveillance for political reasons and later infiltrated by an RCMP officer who incited violence. When this and other abuses of the RCMP became public, it sparked a scandal which lead to the creation of CSIS.

In the first hour, Rachel Ray, Cherokee, spoke about her years of experience working with wolves, why they need our protection and their spirit of freedom and purity. Ray shared numerous stores about the extraordinary intelligence of wolves and their capacity for compassion, love and bonding.
Ray spoke about the massive hunting and inhumane killing in Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana and what can be done to help halt these practices.
In the second hour, Christine Jones, spoke about the foreclosure industry and what can be done to save our homes. She began the hour with a brief description of her struggles with the industry.
Jones spoke about the importance of knowing the law and one rights pertaining to home ownership and foreclosure. She spoke about her success with Capital Foreclosure Defense and why the process empowers homeowners to use the judicial system, existing case law against lenders and uses federal law that allows homeowners to stay in their homes and fight foreclosure.
In the third hour, Dr. Eldon Taylor, delightful and insightful returning guest and author of "What Does that Mean:: Exploring Mind, Meaning, and Mysteries" and New York Times best seller, "Choices and Illusions" and "Mind Programming: From Persuasion and Brainwashing, to Self-Help and Practical Metaphysics", discussed why our thoughts are so rarely original, the meaning of life and how to look for clues to the unique meaning of our journeys through life.
Taylor elaborated on the paradoxes we encounter and why, the role of fear and the importance of vigilance in our awareness. Lastly, he shared stories about his love of animals and their amazing level of consciousness.

A decade and a half ago, Samantha Martin was placed in foster care for support for her disability, Trisomy 18. She was not toilet-trained until after three years of applications to obtain her release from foster care, when she was found to have had seven limb fractures and untreated seizures, among other casual indignities. She died from a seizure shortly after coming home.

Haiti Info-thon: Cuban Doctors in Haiti

While the world sat around and wondered what they could do to support Haitians after the earthquake, Cuban doctors were already at work. Since the late 1990's Cuban doctors have had a presence in Haiti, and have also been training Haitian doctors. At the time of the earthquake in Haiti, 402 Cuban internationalists, 302 of them medical personnel, had already been helping Haitians. These together with many of the 500 Haitian doctors who had been trained in Cuba free of charge formed the essential early group of lifesavers, attending to 1,102 Haitian patients in the first 24 hours after the earthquake. They have continued their work, boosted by an additional medical brigade which arrived promptly from Cuba. In this interview, Omme speaks with Nin Paglicia from the Canada Network on Cuba about the work of Cuban doctors in Haiti and the international Cuban doctors program.

Can we use music to help us fight as well as chill-out? Who tells us what to focus on and why? Do we have any say in all this?
