Reading To Dogs

This time on The Children's Hour we explore how reading to dogs can help kids feeling confident and excited about reading. Read To The Dogs programs can be found in many libraries, and sometimes they come to schools. We learn why reading to dogs can help kids become better readers, and what inspires the dogs to sit so patiently listening to kids. Friends from the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Library's Read to the Dogs program brought us two dogs who participate in the program, Trace and Gimble. They are really cute! We also hear a story by John Keenan and Joanne Wilson-Keenan about a dog named Rover and how he transformed a classroom of reluctant readers into bookworms, just by hanging around and listening. This episode is mixed with great music celebrating reading, dogs, and books. This episode was recorded by Chad Scheer at the Outpost Performance Space in Albuquerque, New Mexico and produced by Senior Producer, Christina Stella with help from Eli Henley. He has a forthcoming book, "Nobody Sent Us" How We Derailed Chicago's Bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics, which he talks about, Tresser unpacks the scam of the corporate, real estate, finance and construction side of hosting the modern day Olympics that usually leaves the host city's tax payers in debt, stuck with the bills, along with the loss of affordable housing, public space and freedom to enjoy their city due to the required transfer of local sovereignty to the Olympic Committee for the duration of the construction and Games due to their designation as "National Security Events". Chicago at the time was experiencing a financial crisis. Neoliberal gibberish from the University of Chicago promoted "privatization of government services" to deal with the financial crisis and public schools to create private investment schemes. Mayor Daley's administration faced one major scandal after another including institutionalized Police Torture under CPD Commander John Burge and The Hired Truck Program, a program that involved hiring private trucks to do city work and saw over 40 people convicted and serve prison time.

Peggy Bulger– "The Story Corps"

The American Folklife Preservation Act of 1976 directed the Library of Congress to gather stories and art of everyday people to reflect the identity of America, which is recognized as the core of family and community life. The thought is that by linking us to the past we are better able to develop our understanding of the present. The Story Corps is a current project of the American Folklife justify of the Library of Congress. Two air stream trailers, retrofitted with state of the art recording equipment, will visit towns and cities throughout the United States for about a year beginning in June 2005, to collect recordings of every day people interviewing each other about their lives. Anyone will be welcome to visit the Story Corps trailer that may be near where you live, by signing up on line at www.storycorps.net. Each participant receives a copy of the interview, and may donate a copy to the Library of Congress. This interview with Dr. Peggy Bulger, the Director of the American Folklife justify at the Library of Congress was recorded in her office at the Library of Congress on May 20, 2005. She began by reviewing the history of the American Folklife and the purpose of Story Corps project.
