Gentrification: Vancouver's homelessness crisis

In the face of the 2010 Olympics, the pressures of gentrification are contributing to a crisis in homelessness and underhousing -- particularly in the Downtown Eastside. Following on a September 16 talk by Neil Smith, urban geographer Elvin K. Wyly spoke about the importance of vigilance to prevent the loss of affordable housing in Vancouver's downtown eastside, saying nearly 5000 single room occupancy units were under threat.
