July 21, 2022, 4:42 a.m.
Welcome to "The Radio Art Hour," a show where art is not just on the radio, but is the radio. "The Radio Art Hour" draws from the Wave Farm Broadcast Radio Art Archive, an online resource that aims to identify, coalesce, and celebrate historical and contemporary international radio artworks made by artists around the world, created specifically for terrestrial AM/FM broadcast, whether it be via commercial, public, community, or independent transmission. Come on a journey with us as radio artists explore broadcast radio space through poetic resuscitations and playful celebrations/subversions of the complex relationship between senders and receivers in this hour of radio about radio as an art form. "The Radio Art Hour" features introductions from Philip Grant and Tom Roe, and from Wave Farm Radio Art Fellows Karen Werner, Andy Stuhl, and Jess Speer. The Conet Project's recordings of numbers radio stations serve as interstitial sounds. Go to wavefarm.org for more information about "The Radio Art Hour" and Wave Farm's Radio Art Archive.

Everything Is Awful

July 21, 2022, 4:39 a.m.
"Turn On The News" is the weekly newscast from the fictional Radio Network, with parody radio coverage of the radio and its headlines. Now with computerized news readers, and fewer meddling reporters, plus aggregated reporting, and automated music. Tune in "Turn On The News" each week for the latest news, radio art, and more from our robot reporters, making sure you hear both sides -- good and evil -- every time you "Turn On The News." It is often a mash-up of the week's news, and sometimes a radio news fantasy with song parodies and covers similar to "Dr. Demento" and comedy skits and more. Produced by Tom Roe at Wave Farm and WGXC.

We sit down with Nidal Al Azraq, executive director of the organization 1for3, to discuss his work in the Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem

July 21, 2022, 3:01 a.m.
Nidal explains what his organization (1for3) has been doing every day, and the never-ending Israeli hassles it and its flock manage somehow to withstand. As Nidal explains, the Aida refugee camp is an Israeli construct. Palestinians, robbed of their longtime homes, were pushed into camps like this. It’s under military occupation and constant threat of Israeli violence. Seventy years in, Israel’s leaders continue to pound its victims with lethal violence and theft. For example, fragmentation of the West Bank continues to grow, blocking Palestinian farmers from their farms, and robbing their precious water. Using weapons made in the USA, Israeli soldiers’ war training uses Palestinians as targets. Nidal himself was shot in the foot from an Israeli helicopter. Nidal reports on two celebrated accomplishments by the Aida community, not yet destroyed by Israelis. One is a fabulous new school which has become famous for the excellence of its special ed program. Architect Hubert Murray (husband of our very own saint, Nancy Murray) played a major part in this project. The other was rooftop gardens, hindered however by more Israeli water theft.

Indonesian Coal + Food For Soul

July 20, 2022, 3:17 a.m.
This week on Sea Change Radio, we dig into the archives and listen to two very different stories about consumption. First, we speak to global journalist Nithin Coca who has written a series of pieces for Mongabay.com about Indonesia’s alarming headfirst dive into the coal industry. We discuss the high-level corruption that allowed coal to take off in Indonesia, examine the lax regulatory standards that imperil workers while allowing the country to keep export prices low and learn about the environmental degradation that the Indonesian coal boom is causing. Then we revisit our conversation with Lara Gilmore, who along with her husband, chef and restaurateur Massimo Bottura, run the world-renowned Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy. In addition to running a three-star Michelin restaurant, Bottura and Gilmore have created a unique template for feeding the needy through their nonprofit, Food For Soul. Based on the concept of the Italian refettorio, a place where monks gathered together to share their meals, Food For Soul has elevated the soup kitchen to a whole new level, cooking and serving delicious meals in warm, elegant environments.

Trying to awaken the UN's International Criminal Court

July 19, 2022, 2:22 a.m.
After many years of endeavors to get access to justice, Palestinian civil society and victims welcomed the UN ICC Prosecutor’s announcement that there was sufficient evidence proving the commission of war crimes in the territory of Palestine. However, seven years since the beginning of the preliminary investigation and more than a year after the opening of a supposedly full-fledged investigation, no concrete steps have been taken by the Court to put an end to the ‘impunity crisis’ in the Israeli-Palestinian setting. While the ICC has recently proved that it is capable of a prompt reaction over serious and urgent situations, the Prosecutor’s seeming reluctance to select cases in the Palestine situation gives rise to a serious concern about a practice of double standards. The presentation today brings together Palestinian NGOs senior officers, and scholars, to shed light on the ongoing perpetration of serious violations of Palestinians’ fundamental rights and publicly denounce the lack of effective measures taken by the Court in one of the most documented situations for the commission of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The speakers at this morning’s forum, which was recorded a few weeks ago in The Hague, Netherlands, home to the ICC, call upon all stakeholders to invite the ICC to ensure that accountability in Palestine is pursued without any further delay The participants in this edited forum that you will hear include Raje Sourani, Director of the Center for Palestinian Rights, Susan Akram, professor at Boston University School of Law, Shawan Jabreen, General Direcor of Al Haq, and Issam Younis, Director Al Menzen Centre for Human Rights. The moderator is Triestin Mariniello, Legal Team for Gaza Victims. The forum title is "The ICC and Palestinian Justice." Mariniello begins the forum.
