WWI - The Christmas Truce of 1914

The Christmas Truce was an unofficial cease-fire on parts of the Western Front. Guns fell silent for one to several days. Soldiers emerged from the trenches and talked, exchanged gifts and kicked around a soccer ball. Trenches were close in some places, separated by 50 yards or less. The Story of the Christmas Truce WWI is a documentary film about this spontaneous cease-fire. Thanks to historians Peter Hart, Taff Gillingham and Robin Schaefer, and their choice of rare documentary photos, footage and archived letters from soldiers of both sides. The documentary focuses on the section of the trenches where British and German soldiers were facing each other. This radio program goes into distribution on December 13, 2022, - by coincidence on the same day that nearly 1,000 faith leaders called for a temporary ceasefire in the War in Ukraine. They write that the way out of the war in Ukraine will not be a military solution and believe that a Christmas Truce offers an opportunity for moral clarity that could be the first step toward a negotiated peace. Tamara's Peace Tour

Activist Tamara Lorincz recounts her tour throughout Europe recently, mainly focusing on Russia, where she sought person-to-person discussions about how to seek peace. There was never any vote to have a New Cold War with Russia. We all lose from this conflict - so much of what needs to be done, in terms of economy, environment, and health requires international cooperation. Facing cold and unwelcoming weather in Russia, and speaking only English, Tamara nevertheless found a warm and welcoming people there. She presents a compelling view of the modernization of Moscow, and encourages Canadians to exercise their right to travel there. Russians are not wishing to be 'liberated' by NATO. Far from it, they see NATO as waging a war with Russia, and are waiting to be reunited with their relatives in East Ukraine. Tamara details the demands that a peace movement should be making. Foremost among them is Canada leaving NATO. It is dragging us into the most dangerous, expensive conflicts that endanger global security. You can learn more about the Canada-Wide Peace and Justice Network at its homepage. It's up to citizens, as there is no "opposition" in Parliament. Time to start taking politicians to task, including the NDP and "Greens," over the Western refusal in abiding the Minsk Accords, which would have prevented today's fighting. Why don't we have a functioning architecture to resolve international disputes? Tamara explains that the EU and NATO undermined the OSCE, which was supposed to fulfill that purpose. She also discusses the sorry state of Romania, a NATO vassal, where Tamara was prevented from picketing a meeting of NATO foreign ministers.

Women in Uganda's Parliament are passing new laws that aim to protect children and women, and improve conditions at home, school and work; however, implementation with limited funding is a problem. Some of the risks are from ingrained harmful traditions, but many are from the disintegration of family life and of the schools, made worse by covid. Rebuilding society once it falls apart is a tall order. Uganda's efforts are being studied by other African countries. One important element is involving men in the campaign.
