The Case Against Lawyers
The control and influence lawyers have in American society has grown enormously in the past 75 years. The influence was foreseen in the 1830s by Alexis de Tocqueville and described in his book, âDemocracy in America.â Catherine Crier discusses and critiques this influence in her book, âThe Case Against Lawyers.â Crier, herself a former lawyer, district attorney, and judge is now a commentator on Court TV,

Sea Shepherd Panel - Impact of Climate Change on Marine Wildlife
Dec. 7, 2021, 6:16 p.m.
Paul Watson was cofounder of Greenpeace and led the campaigns against the slaughter of baby seals in the late seventies. Over a disagreement about direct action Watson separated from Greenpeace and founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in 1977. Thatâs a non-profit, marine conservation organization based on the San Juan Island, Washington, in the US.
Best known for their protection of whales in confrontations with Russian, Norwegian and Japanese fleets, Sea Shepherd have defended dolphins, seals, sharks, penguins, turtles, fish, krill and aquatic birds from poaching, unsustainable fishing, and habitat destruction. They say: âWe have to halt the destruction of life in our Ocean, for if life in the Ocean dies, we all die.â Conversely - protecting the ocean is the best method to prevent climate collapse.
Over 4 decades since itâs founding Sea Shepherd has become a global organization with a fleet of 12 ships and chapters all over the world. Maike Baun and Taïme Smit are associated with the most recently established chapter in Portugal. Maike is media coordinator and Taime is a marine biologist.
On June 21st, 2021, Maike Baun organized a zoom call to discuss the urgent topic of how climate change is impacting the oceans and how we can protect life on land by saving the ocean. These are excerpts from a 35 minute panel that is posted on YouTube under the title: The Impact of Climate Change on Marine Life.
For more information look up the website of https://seashepherd.org/
Paul Watson, most recently, is the author of URGENT, Save our ocean to survive climate change, published by Groundswell Books in September 2021. For more on that book come back when TUC Radio returns.
John Stoehr on Critical Race Theory Pt. 2
Dec. 7, 2021, 5:42 p.m.
It's right in the Declaration of Independence that everyone is created equal. So why is an entire political party so scared of talking critically about race in this country? This week on Sea Change Radio, the second half of our discussion with John Stoehr of The Editorial Board centered around the latest Republican boogeyman, critical race theory. We look at the media's role in creating something out of nothing, compare critical race theory to the debate over gun control, and examine how the hullabaloo about CRT is connected to the so-called "Big Lie" and why both pose a threat to our democracy. Then, we hear an excerpt from Editorial Board contributor Magdi Semrau on how Black voices are largely left out of public education debates in this country.
