Sonic Cafe #274/Stuart Smalley's Daily Affirmations

Jan. 27, 2022, 6:44 a.m.
Sonic Café, love is a good thing, Sheryl Crow. So welcome to another hour of intelligent, eclectic music comedy and pop culture. It’s a thing we call the Sonic Café, I’m Scott Clark and this is episode 274. This time the Sonic Café presents the feel good psychobabble of Stuart Smalley’s Daily Affirmations. A bit that aired on Saturday Night Live through the mid nineties. Stuart was the brainchild of Al Franken, comedian, SNL alum, and former US Senator who was canceled by the cancel culture, a few years back. So ahh yeah. The Sonic Cafe brings some of Stuart’s most helpful segments including the time he helped Michael Jordan get his game back, Martin Lawrence overcome 400 years of oppression, talk with his nephew about chicken butts, and help Charles Barkley deal with the fact he never won an NBA championship. Hey, if Stuart Smalley can help these guys, he can sure help us too, right? All these Daily Affirmations are wrapped in a music mix pulled from 30 years or so. Listen for U2, Blind Mellon, Journey, Godley & Crème, The Strawbs and many more, as the Sonic Café makes you feel good about yourself with the Daily Affirmations of Stuart Smalley from our little café overlooking the big blue Pacific, we’re the Sonic Café.

The British Library held a celebration of ideas in the book by David Graeber and David Wengrow. They said: The Dawn of Everything challenges our assumptions about the origins of farming, property, cities, democracy and slavery and, in doing this … offers a path toward imagining new forms of freedom and new ways of organizing society. David Wengrow co-authored the book with the late David Graeber. Emma Dabiri is a teaching fellow in the African department at SOAS, a Visual Sociology PhD researcher at Goldsmiths and the author of Don’t Touch My Hair and What White People can do Next: From Allyship to Coalition, a Sunday Times and Irish Times bestseller. Global Investigative Journalism Network + Pandemic Plastic Use

Jan. 25, 2022, 4:57 p.m.
An icon of 20th Century journalism, Walter Cronkite, once said, "The profession of journalism ought to be about telling people what they need to know - not what they want to know." That quote was never more relevant than today. This week on Sea Change Radio we speak with two reporters. First we talk about the state of independent journalism with David Kaplan, the Executive Director of the Global Investigative Journalism Network, an organization promoting cutting-edge investigative reporting. Then we hear from Tara Duggan of the San Francisco Chronicle about some reporting she has done on single-use plastic products -- how their use surged during the pandemic and whether retailers are finally reverting back to pre-pandemic practices.

20 years of Guantanamo: protest rally, poem by prisoner

Jan. 25, 2022, 3:29 p.m.
This is a report of a protest demonstration on the 20th anniversary of the opening of the extra-legal US "detention center" at Guantanamo, Cuba. About 10 activists came out to voice their outrage at the prison, the ridiculously corrupt way its prisoners were chosen and gathered, the horrible treatment they get, and the fact that it is still open after 20 years. The rally was held at Park St Station on the Boston Common on January 11, 2022. The protesters were mostly in orange jumpsuits, like the prisoners at Guantanamo, as they read the names of the men held there, told their stories, and called for the Biden administration to follow through on his promise to close it down. Finally, a powerful poem by prisoner Adnan Latif. For more information, contact Susan McLucas, SusanBMcL@gmail.com.
