Ukraine: Russia is not the problem
Jan. 12, 2022, 6:45 p.m.
1. Desmond Tutu
The late Archbishop Desmond Tutu was not just a one-issue politician. He strongly supported the Palestinian cause, something completely ignored in the eulogies of him by Western politicians and media. He also called for the burial of skeletons of victims of the events of 1994 in Rwanda.
2. Ukraine
Take the news items with a grain of salt.
In 1939, Hitler claimed that the Poles were not only massing on the German border, but also attacked German border guards on the frontier. These lies provided the pretext for the start of WWII.
The Ukrainian Defense Minister recently called upon Canada and the U.S. to send troops immediately because Ukrainians needed trustworthy "Anglo-Saxons." On the other hand, the Minister said that the French and Germans were untrustworthy because their governments wanted to find an accommodation with Russia.
No media followed up on the bigoted notions of the Ukrainian minister, though he was quoted in a page one article in the Globe and Mail, nor was the story repeated. Anglo-Saxon reticence?
3. Xinjiang
Former President of World Uyghur Congress and prominent spokesperson, Rebiya Kadeer, visited Yasukuni Shrine which contains the remains of 1,068 convicted war criminals on May 12, 2012. She did so as a gesture of solidarity with the reactionary right of Japan which still seeks to justify Japanese aggression which led to WW2. The shrine is never visited by representatives of countries that fought Japan.
4. Latakia
Syria managed to rally its people, and, with the help of its allies, Russia, China, Hezbollah, Iran, to defeat most of the terrorist proxy armies of the West.
Now, Israel has begun to attack the Syrian port city of Latakia, while the US maintains its occupation of the oil fields of Syria's North-East.
However, the support network for the terrorists is unravelling. Turkey's economy has tanked and its leader, Erdogan, has plummeted in the polls. Saudi Clown Prince, MBS, is also losing his war on Yemen and might bring about the demise of the monarchy in Saudi Arabia.

An interview with Israeli historian, Ilan Pappe, as well as a Mondoweiss article on being academically blackballed for speaking out
Jan. 11, 2022, 6:27 p.m.
Our feature presentation is an interview of Israeli historian, Ilan Pappe, by British journalist Peter Bolton on the Canary Channel in the United Kingdom. (UKâs Canary has nothing whatever to do with The Israeli Lobbyâs Canary Mission Black List. The Canary is a left-leaning UK-based online publication and is generally critical of Israel and is pro-Palestinian in its coverage.) Among the issues thoroughly discussed: why Pappeâs âone democratic stateâ is right and achievable, especially versus the so-called âtwo-state solutionâ advocated by Professor Norman Finkelstein and numerous US politicians. Reference is made to the analogous issue in South Africa.
Before that interview, we read an unsettling Mondoweiss article by our former co-host Samer Jaber. He recounts his courageous speaking out and the PA's outrageous punishment of him for doing so. Worse, after his friend suggested to NGO donors to the PA that they postpone their funding until after the legislative elections that Abbas had summarily canceled, his friend was abducted and murdered by PA "security."
Debt, The First 5,000 Years, David Graeber in conversation with Charlie Rose
Jan. 11, 2022, 6:06 p.m.
The name of the anthropologist David Graeber came - again - into huge prominence at the end of 2021 when the book he coauthored with archaeologist David Wengrow was published. âThe Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanityâ is described as a âdramatically new understanding of human history, challenging our most fundamental assumptions about social evolution â from the development of agriculture and cities to the origins of the state, democracy, and inequality â and revealing new possibilities for human emancipationâ.
Sadly, David Graeber is not present to enjoy the acclaim or to participate in debates about the many provocative ideas laid out in the 704 page book. He died only weeks after finishing the book on September 2, 2020. He was 59 years young.
A professor of anthropology at the London School of Economics, Graeber taught anarchism and anti-capitalist movements. âHe was a hugely influential anthropologist, political activist and public intellectual,â³ said Professor Laura Bear, head of the anthropology department at the London School of Economics. âOur community of staff and students will not be the same now he is gone, but we know his brilliant work will be read by generations to come.â
David Graeber was an assistant professor at Yale University from 1998 to 2005, when the university, controversially, decided not to renew his contract before he was eligible for tenure. Graeber moved into what he called âacademic exileâ in the UK, first to the University of London and finally the London School of Economics.
David Graeberâs 2011 book âDebt: The First 5,000 Yearsâ was an anti-capitalist analysis that struck a chord with many readers in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Another response to the 2008 crisis was Graeberâs participation in the Occupy Wall Street movement, that began in Zuccotti Park in New York Cityâs Wall Street Financial District, in September 2011 - the same year Graeberâs book âDebt: The First 5,000 Yearsâ was published. It gave rise to the wider Occupy Movement in the United States and other countries.
In late December, 2021, a long lost interview showed up on YouTube that was conducted by television journalist and talk show host Charlie Rose. There is no exact date associated with this 23 minute clip but the topic is Graeberâs book âDebt: The First 5,000 Yearsâ published in 2011. And Charlie Rose is asking Graeber about Debt, Occupy Wall Street, Democracy, and Capitalism.

Jan. 11, 2022, 3:54 p.m.

This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to Bob Berwyn of Inside Climate News to learn what this fire that destroyed over one thousand homes reveals to us about the new normal.
