This time the Sonic Café presents Cats and Dogs, whether you're a cat or a dog person, it’s almost certain you don’t like the other. Personally, we’ve got a Roomba. A little electricity is all Roomba needs and for that, it cleans up after us, not the other way around. Anyway, we’ll hear both sides of the cats and dogs debate from a group of pet loving comedians, including Jim Gaffigan, Bill Burr, Johnny Beehner, Corey Rodrigues and Dave Chappelle. All wrapped in a music mix spanning 37 years. Listen for the Pixies, Donald Fagen, the Dead Kennedy’s from their Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death release. I love that title. Plus Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd and more. Oh and a big shout out to Deanna who listens to the Sonic Café on WFMP in Louisville, Kentucky. Let us know where you listen, email us at Sonic Café Radio at gmail.com, that’s Sonic Café Radio at gmail.com. So whether you're a cat person, or a dog person, there’s something for you straight ahead on Cats and Dogs, from our little pet friendly café in the Pacific northwest, we’re the Sonic Café.

Nov. 23, 2021, 6:31 p.m.
This interview aired in 2011 and is still relevant today, Sister Kelleher passed on Aug 16 2013 and her life continues to be an inspiration to all***Gives us all something to think about at this time of year** We speak to Sister Elizabeth Kelleher, an 85 year old nun with the Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement, we talk about her efforts to stop more gentrification in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside the poorest postal code in Canada. Sister Elizabeth is a pillar in the Downtown Eastside where she tirelessly gives of her time and continues to be a source of inspiration for many, many people. She operates a soup kitchen that feeds between 300 and 500 of the city’s most poverty stricken each day. It is estimated that there are over 10,000 homeless people in BC , of which 32 percent are aboriginal, and amongst women, 50 percent. A homeless person dies every 12 days in B.C. Conservative Estimates put the national homeless numbers at close to 300,000. The annual cost of homelessness in Canada in 2007 was approximately $4.5 to $6 billion in emergency services, community organizations, and non-profits. The cost both financially and morally of doing nothing is tremendous. Canada is the only G8 country without a national housing plan or poverty reduction strategy. #716 -- Jean Shepherd: The Great Hamburger Blowup (R)

Nov. 23, 2021, 4:24 p.m.
Classic broadcast from 1965 by radio's great humorist-satirist-storyteller, Jean Shepherd. Condensed by K.D. With wit and humor, Shepherd reflects on adolescent psychology ... on being "shot down" ... on traumatic experiences ... and on the absurd prose on the back of packages--notably Official World's Fair Toothpicks. Then he tells a story from his childhood: how he snuck into a Ukrainian-American picnic, pretended to speak Ukrainian, and--to his later regret--consumed 17 hamburgers.

Nov. 23, 2021, 4:21 p.m.
As millions of American families gather this week for their Thanksgiving feasts, we thought we'd take a peek behind the curtain at one of the world's most celebrated restaurants while at the same time discussing food waste and insecurity. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to Lara Gilmore, who along with her husband, chef and restaurateur Massimo Bottura, run the world-renowned Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy. In addition to running a three-star Michelin restaurant, ranked the top restaurant in the world by Restaurant Magazine in 2016 and 2018, Bottura and Gilmore have created a unique template for feeding the needy through their nonprofit, Food For Soul. Based on the concept of the Italian refettorio, a place where monks gathered together to share their meals, Food For Soul has elevated the soup kitchen to a whole new level, cooking and serving delicious meals in warm, elegant environments.

Deborah W. Ellis: CFP at Cogent Independent Advisors

Nov. 23, 2021, 9:27 a.m.
Our guest this week is Deborah Ellis, a certified financial planner with Cogent Independent Advisors. Deborah joins us to discuss her journey through the markets; how she went from a career in the film industry to pursuing her passion in the investment world. Listen along as we discuss the important people who started us on our journey, how a financial planner can help people from all aspects, as well as some fun stories from her time on the sets of several iconic shows of the past. About Deborah W. Ellis: As a certified financial planner Deborah exemplifies the Cogent Way. She has the education, life experience, and knowledge of changes in the financial landscape of the 21st century to help clients in identifying and attaining their financial goals. She’s seen how devastating a lack of fundamental financial knowledge can be for individuals, families and businesses. She believes that, like anything expected to grow and thrive, money must be cared for and nurtured. Without the proper guidance, financial wealth may not necessarily mean financial well-being. She is proud to have worked in all phases of film and television production over the years, but was moved by what she experienced to offer clients a source for financial guidance. To this end, she combined her math and computer knowledge with her creativity and her commitment to integrity, transparency and ongoing education to pursue her career as a Certified Financial Planner. Deborah earned her MBA in Investments, Finance and Economics from Pepperdine University Malibu, California and her Bachelors Degree in Art from University of California, Los Angeles. She completed requirements to sit for the Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) exam at Colorado College of Financial Planning, where she also earned her Charter Retirement Planning Counselor designation. She is a member of the Director’s Guild of American, Women in Film and the Financial Planning Association. Deborah lives in Southern California with her husband, Bruce and their loving poodle Sandy

Black/Palestinian Solidarity - Cornel West's recent keynote speech

Nov. 23, 2021, 8:44 a.m.
Our feature presentation is Cornel West, giving the keynote speech at the opening session of the Annual Conference of the Jerusalem Fund and Palestine Center in Washington, DC. We include some Q&A. West is a professor, author and scholar who currently teaches at Union Theological Seminary in NYC. He previously taught at Yale, Harvard, and University of Paris. He is also a human rights activist who can be found demonstrating on the streets as well as teaching in the classroom. His major subject here was Black/Palestinian solidarity. One Q&A was on Harvard's recent denial of tenure -- even though Harvard had granted it before! The Harvard Crimson recently posted an extensive article on this which we recommend: it's at https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2021/10/14/cornel-west-harvard-tenure/.
