Will Modern Civilization be the Death of Us? - Professor William Rees

Sept. 14, 2021, 7:39 p.m.
Does our modern techno-industrial society destroy the biophysical basis of our existence? Bill Rees is a population ecologist, ecological economist, and Professor Emeritus of British Columbia’s School of Community and Regional Planning. He asks the question why humanity has not responded, in over 50 years, to warnings about rising greenhouse gases and heat, over exploitation of oceans, forests, soils and water; and species extinction. Prof. Bill Rees also challenges the over-optimistic ”problem solvers” on their claim, in their version of the Green New Deal, that if we replace oil with solar we can continue living much as we do today - in an economy based on growth and consumption. Bill Rees had been invited by the Institute on Religion in an Age of Science and The International Society for Science and Religion. They requested an answer to their question: Will Modern Civilization be the Death of Us? Recorded July 2, 2020

Sami Grover: We're All Hypocrites Now

Sept. 14, 2021, 4:47 p.m.
Have you ever heard the term climate hypocrite? Maybe you've noticed as it was applied to some high profile celebrity or advocate flying across the globe to give a speech on reducing carbon emissions? Or maybe you feared you yourself may be one as you sat in an air- conditioned office promoting the planetary virtues of a vegan diet? Our guest today on Sea Change Radio has thought a lot about this. He's environmental journalist Sami Grover, whose first book entitled "We're All Hypocrites Now" reminds us that environmentalists need not make the perfect the enemy of the good. We discuss the difficulty of trying to live a carbon-reduced lifestyle in a modern world largely built by fossil fuels, we talk about ways to as he puts it, live a little lighter on the earth, and we explore how regular folks who are not at the forefront of systems change may still have an influence beyond simply modifying their personal lifestyle choices.

Building Bridges Not Walls for A World Without Borders

Sept. 14, 2021, 11:20 a.m.
Build Bridges, Not Walls: A Journey To A World Without Borders with Todd Miller, an activist and who has researched and written about border issues for twenty years. His works include Storming the Wall: Climate Change, Migration, and Homeland Security and Border Patrol Nation: Dispatches from the Front Lines of Homeland Security and his newest book Build Bridges, Not Walls! Todd Miller has been reporting from international border zones for over twenty-five years and takes us on a journey that begins with the most basic questions: What happens to our collective humanity when the impulse to help one another is criminalized? Miller takes us through a series of encounters -with climate refugees, members of indigenous communities, and provokes reflections on the ways in which nation-states create the very problems that drive immigration, and how the abolition of borders could make the world a more sustainable, habitable place for all. As more and more millions are forced to migrate to survive, and as militarized borders disfigure an ever-increasing portion of the Earth's surface, Todd Miller's analysis and reporting have become essential to understanding both the world in which we live and the one for which we have to fight.
