Sonic Cafe #249/Twilight Zone Classic: The Chaser

Aug. 4, 2021, 7:53 a.m.
Sonic Café, from the Big Generator album that’s Yes with the Rhythm of Love, so ahh we love it, that you’ve stopped by our little radio café, I’m Scott Clark and this is episode 249. This time the Sonic Café steps into a place that resides between light and darkness as we present another Twilight Zone Classic. We bring you episode 31, originally broadcast in May of 1960. It’s the story of Roger Shackelforth, a man who so desperately desires the love Leela, that it physically hurts. But once he has it becomes so smothered in love that he’ll stop at almost nothing to rid himself of it and her. It’s also the story A. Dameon, a crusty old professor who concocted the can’t fail love potion he reluctantly sells for a dollar, as well as the glove cleaner, a poison guaranteed to rid you of the person and the love that now overwhelms you. Our tale is wrapped in a music mix pulled from 38 years that fits in real nice. Listen for the Rolling Stones, Morphine, The Searchers, Neil Finn, Richard Wright and more, as the Sonic Café presents The Chaser, in another Twilight Zone Classic. We’re the Sonic Café.

The First Nuclear Chain Reaction - Enrico Fermi and Henry Moore (ONE of TWO) - ARCHIVE

Aug. 3, 2021, 3:59 p.m.
The Italian physicist Enrico Fermi set off the first nuclear chain reaction in an underground tennis-court at the University of Chicago in December 1942. His experiment led directly to the building of the plutonium bomb that destroyed the city of Nagasaki. There are competing claims as to the beginning of the nuclear age. Was it the day of Trinity, was it Hiroshima, or was it Fermi with his willingness to risk a nuclear explosion in the middle of a crowded city. But more important than the date is the need to comprehend the fundamental change that the beginning of the nuclear age has brought about. Albert Einstein said that the unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking; and "thus we drift toward unparalleled catastrophe." Iain Boal's story is intriguing because it places this quote into a new context. He begins by briefly setting back the clock - reminding us of the earliest militant resistance to the beginning of the industrial age. Iain Boal was educated at Oxford, Cambridge and London Universities. He has taught at Harvard and Stanford and is affiliated with the Geography Department at UC Berkeley. Recorded in March 2002 at a series of TUC Radio events where scientists and historians met with a small circle of friends. They gave previews of projects that had not yet appeared in any public space.

We learn about EV models of both cars and trucks coming down the pike, how traditional car dealerships in the US have yet to fully embrace the transition to an electric fleet (a transition which experts like Motavalli see as inevitable), what’s holding up the federal government’s efforts to purchase electric vehicles and why German and Japanese automakers remain behind the US in terms of electric vehicle manufacturing.

Striking Coal Miners Say Its A Matter of Life & Breath Part 2

Aug. 2, 2021, 8:49 a.m.
Building Bridges radio, produced by Mimi Rosenberg & Ken Nash ***************************************** Part 2 of a 2 part program. Part 1 was sent last week Alabama Striking Coal Miners, 4 Months on the Picket Line Say A Fair Contract Is A Matter of Life & Breath! with . Cecil Edward Roberts, Jr., Pres. of the United Mine Workers of America (UMA), a sixth-generation coal miner and one of the labor movements most stirring orators . Braxton Wright, striking coal miner . Haeden Wright, pres. of a local UMWA womens auxiliary unit For the first time in four decades, union mine workers in Alabama are taking part in a historic strike, accusing Warrior Met Coal of exploiting workers and now inspiring violence against them on the picket line. More than three months in, the historic labor action has been ignored by CNN, Fox News, or MSNBC, says Media Matters, but certainly not Building Bridges. The origins of the strike lie in the 2016 takeover of a failing coal company by Warrior Met, leading to profits for the buyer alongside lower pay and loss of benefits for the workers. The miners in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, who were caught up in the acquisition faced dramatic pay cuts and weaker safety measures for what is one of the nations most dangerous professions, leading to multiple charges of unfair labor practices levied against Warrior Met.
