Fixing American Politics With Aaron Huertas (Pt. II )

July 20, 2021, 11:43 a.m.
To most progressives, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg was a ground-breaking stalwart for the rule of law and a champion for the most vulnerable. But others resent the Notorious RBG who, despite having cancer in her 80s, chose to not step down from the bench during the Obama Administration – her subsequent death allowed Donald Trump to fill a precious Supreme Court seat in his last year. This week on Sea Change Radio, the second half of our discussion with political consultant Aaron Huertas. We focus on the fact that some of the nation’s most influential people are well past the average retirement age. We look at 83 year-old Stephen Breyer’s seeming reluctance to retire from the Supreme Court, talk about California Senator Dianne Feinstein plowing ahead with re-election plans (when she’ll be 91), and explore possible solutions to an exceedingly delicate balance of power.

Fixing American Politics With Aaron Huertas (Pt. I )

July 20, 2021, 11:41 a.m.
The days of bipartisanship in Washington are long gone but there are many on the Hill still clinging for dear life to this antiquated notion which really hasn’t existed since the 1980s. This week on Sea Change Radio, we are joined by political consultant Aaron Huertas in the first half of a two-part conversation to look at the variety of political options facing a Democratic Party which is currently holding a razor thin majority in the Senate. We discuss the current state of the filibuster, dive into the many ways to craft policy with and without it, and look at the role that unions and grassroots organizers will play in moving us away from this obsession over bipartisanship.

interviews author/journalist Arnold August

July 19, 2021, 4:31 p.m.
Latin Waves host Sylvia Richardson speaks with journalist Arnold August about the legacy of empire. After more than 100 years of US imperialistic aggression in Latin America, people in the Latin America have learned the habits of empire. Starve the nation with sanctions, make the people scream so they will turn against their own leaders and if that doesn't work invade with military force... Cuba alone has resiliently stood against the 60+ years of US Blockade, an act denounced by the world in countless calls at the United Nations council to lift the embargo on Cuba. Arnold takes us back to 1959 when the story we are living now began

Herman's Radio & Record Room #18

July 19, 2021, 5:40 a.m.
My father Herman Frederick Moe was a radio engineer & TV repairman, a country & western "cowboy singer" and rustic guitar player. He performed in the late 1930’s on live radio before he enlisted in World War II as a radio-telephone technician. This show is my homage to him. My father loved the other side of radio as well – the listening side – it kept him company during many lonesome nights in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s & 60's. From my imagination to your ears – it’s WHFM – vintage music from mid century America. This is music that I believe he would have enjoyed during that era

Canada: Peace Maker or Powder Monkey?

July 18, 2021, 5:01 p.m.
Former CBC employee James M. Minifie once wrote a book entitled, "Canada: Peace Maker or Powder-Monkey." His conclusion was that Canada is a powder-monkey, in that the U.S. could launch acts of aggression against other states, and Canada would follow. And that has largely been the pattern. With the arrest of Meng, Canada has once again attached itself to the U.S. war-wagon. Members of the Green and New Democratic Parties need to ask their candidates if they are for peace, or for a New Cold War with China. Voting for Motion 56 was a serious gauntlet thrown down to challenge China. The word "genocide" is thrown around pretty carelessly these days, and Canadian politicians should take pause in their lazy accusations against China. Evidence of genocidal practices by Canada continue to mount day-by-day, while our MPs polish apples for the Americans. Nobody should continue down the road in any of these parties, unless they demonstrate that they are part of a world-wide desire for the peaceful resolution of differences between peoples and countries. There are many allies for this approach in the United Nations. ----------- Phil also comments on Haiti. How did the group of assassins of the Haitian President all know to go to the Taiwanese Embassy for refuge? Haiti is one of the few countries of the world to have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The U.S. is on a reckless, adventurist path. Biden just unleashed the East Turkestan Islamic Movement to intervene on China by removing them from the terrorist list.

#698 -- Capitalism vs. Democracy, Prosperity, Ecology (R)

July 18, 2021, 4:58 p.m.
Nuclear weapons and climate change pose existential threats to life on earth, says Noam Chomsky. Democratic institutions would be able and inclined to deal with these threats, But since the 1970s, capitalism has succeeded in undermining democracy and democratic institutions, in Europe and the U,S, Thus we have a "perfect storm" of crises. By undermining democracy, capitalists have also greatly increased their own wealth and reduced the prosperity of the 99%. (Continued under "Credits"... )

Rwandan Refugees Were Pursued by the RPF and Western Powers Let It Happen

July 16, 2021, 6:15 p.m.
Professor Masako Yoneakawa, co-representative of Rita-Congo, researcher on refugee issues, peace and conflicts in the Great Lakes Region of Africa, has recently been named a recipient of the Victoire Ingabire Award at a ceremony in Brussels. In this interview with the Taylor Report, Professor Yonekawa explains how the basic story of what occurred in Rwanda 1994 has not been properly reported. To understand the events of 1994 it is necessary to know that Rwanda was invaded in 1990 from Uganda and the refugee crisis and the ensuing violence began at that point. The Professor proved important details about the failure of the UN and other international institutions to protect Rwandan refugees who had fled to Zaire/Congo.
