#688 -- Bitter Lake - Part 1 (R)
May 9, 2021, 10:19 a.m.
ADAM CURTIS's fine documentary, adapted to radio by KD.
It's about the history and politics of Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and the U.S. since 1946. About the many failures of reformers--American, Russian, and Afghan alike--to remake and modernize Afghanistan. It's about shrewd and cynical calculations by Saudi and American leaders--who promote development and stability in Saudi Arabia by exporting Saudi extremist Islam (Wahhabism) abroad--including to Afghanistan.

New Security Law Will Bring Stability and Progress to Hong Kong
May 8, 2021, 8:20 p.m.
Grenville Cross was for ten years a special prosecutor in Hong Kong. He was proud of the 'One-China - Two Systems' and of the HK judiciary.
Phil plays a recording in which Cross starts on the Basic Law of 1997. The Basic Law permits the Hong Kong government the power to make security arrangements, which it failed to do. Instead, the failure allowed China's enemies to sow discord and try to create chaos in HK.
One of the problems created was the inability to deal with fugitive criminals. Many of those elected in the HK elections failed to live up to their oath of office. Instead, they acted as saboteurs and wreckers, trying to harm HK, and calling for foreign intervention.
China's introduction of the new Security Law sets the matter straight by providing electoral reform, extradition, while still maintaining the Basic Law. Hopefully, newly-elected legislators will show loyalty to HK and the PRC. If they do, HK will prosper and be a productive part of the Republic.
The Catastrophes of the Pandemic are the Catastrophes of Capitalism
May 8, 2021, 5:38 p.m.
Phil interviews Stephen Gowans about his recent article, "The Catastrophes of the Pandemic are the Catastrophes of Capitalism."
Catastrophes demonstrate whether governments are fit for the job. Gowans says COVID-19 has shown how much better communist countries have performed for their people: China, Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba. There are also a few capitalist countries that have done well also - Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Gowans plotted deaths-per-country on a matrix along with the wealth of the country. One would think that wealthier countries would do better fighting the pandemic, because they have more resources. But that hypothesis is not proven by the facts.
Communist countries have far outperformed capitalist countries. Phil points out that the Province of Ontario had more deaths than all of China, and the USA had 100 times the deaths of the PRC, even though the USA has only one-fifth of China's population.
Another interesting observation by Gowans is that 3 million people, who succumbed to COVID-19, would be alive today, if the US, UK, Russia, Brazil, and India performed as well as the PRC, Vietnam, Cuba, and North Korea. And the Communist countries did this completely without vaccines, but rather through public health measures.
The Ontario cabinet is full of businesspeople who were elected to "Open Ontario for Business." No wonder they continually opted for keeping their businesses open, people's health be damned!

The End of the Twins, a Memoir of Losing a Brother
Ever wondered what it would be like to have an identical twinâhow alike would you be to that person? How much of an individual would you be? Saul Diskin and his identical twin brother Marty grew up together in New York City where Saul and Marty were inseparable. As adults, they began to live separate lives, Saul in Phoenix and Marty near Boston. In 1991, Marty, who had suffered from leukemia for 20 years, needed a bone marrow transplant, which he received from Saul. In his extraordinarily intimate book, âThe End of the Twins, a Memoir of Losing a Brother,â Saul Diskin chronicles the rich relationship beginning with their early childhood and ending well past Martyâs death in 1997, shortly before their 63rd birthday.
Saul Diskin recommends âEntwined Lives,â by Nancy Segal and âCosmology and Creation: The Spiritual Significance of Contemporary Cosmologyâ by Paul Brockelman.

Suzanne Simard - Dispatches from The Mother Tree Project
May 4, 2021, 6:50 p.m.
Suzanne Simard is Professor of Forest Ecology in the University of British Columbiaâs Faculty of Forestry. In spite of her status in academia, rigorous research and love and respect from her students it took over 30 years for her ideas to break through.
Ferris Jabr writes in the New York Times Magazine: âBy analyzing the DNA in root tips and tracing the movement of molecules through underground conduits, Simard has discovered that fungal threads link nearly every tree in a forest â even trees of different species. Carbon, water, nutrients, alarm signals and hormones can pass from tree to tree through these subterranean circuitsâ¦
Resources tend to flow from the oldest and biggest trees to the youngest and smallest. Chemical alarm signals generated by one tree prepare nearby trees for danger. Seedlings severed from the forestâs underground lifelines are much more likely to die than their networked counterparts. Crucially, a majority of the carbon sequestered in forests resides in the soils, anchored by networks of symbiotic roots, fungi and microbes.
Each year, the worldâs forests capture more than 24 percent of global carbon emissions. When a mature forest is burned or clear-cut, the planet loses an invaluable ecosystem and one of its most effective systems of climate regulation. The razing of an old-growth forest is not just the destruction of magnificent individual trees â itâs the collapse of an ancient republic whose interspecies covenant of reciprocation and compromise is essential for the survival of Earth as weâve known it.â
On May 4, 2021 Suzanne Simardâs book, âFinding the Mother Treeâ came out.
In a rare Ted talk in June 2016 Simard laid out what she discovered. This radio program also includes excerpts from her Zoom seminar at UBC: Dispatches from The Mother Tree Project, on Oct 22, 2020.
And in late 2020 the acclaimed environmental writer Ferris Jabr accompanied Suzanne Simard for several days of field research in rough terrain for what became a cover story in The New York Times Magazine. This program ends with quotes from his extraordinary science based article.
Ferris Jabr has also written for the Scientific American, The Atlantic, Harper's, and The New Yorker.
By now Suzanne Simardâs insights are beginning to influence the thoughts about climate change, carbon sequestration and harvesting techniques in departments of forestry throughout Canada and the US.
Within Our Grasp: Sharman Apt Russell on Childhood Malnutrition
May 4, 2021, 2:58 p.m.
As Anne Frank wrote in her diary, "hunger is not a problem, it is an obscenity." This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to author Sharman Apt Russell about her book entitled Within Our Grasp: Childhood Malnutrition Worldwide and the Revolution Taking Place to End It. We look at some of the areas around the globe plagued by hunger, learn how countries like Brazil and Vietnam have made strides in battling childhood malnutrition and examine how health care professionals and food companies are changing the way they try to tackle this obscenity.
