Dr. Dana Chidekel - You or Your Kid?"

June 23, 2021, 6:32 p.m.
Parents in Charge, Setting Healthy, Loving Boundaries for You and Your Child Children are too often seen and treated as small adults, too often dressed as adults, and too often have their lives planned out for them to be as busy as adults. Treating children as people older than they are overlooks the child’s cognitive abilities, and can lead to unsatisfying and sometimes traumatic relationships. “Parents in Charge, Setting Healthy, Loving Boundaries for You and Your Child” is a book by Dr. Dana Chidekel, a child psychologist near Los Angeles. She asserts that the developing brain of toddlers does not give them the capacity to respond to being placed on equal ground with their parents, and encourages parents to assume their rightful role of authority. Dr. Dana Chidekel recommends “Seabiscuit,” by Laura Hillenbrand. Originally Broadcast: March 12, 2002

Abunimah on Netanyahu's fall; RC Kelly on Israeli apartheid and US Jim Crow

June 23, 2021, 12:36 p.m.
We begin this week with the question: What does the defeat of Netanyahu and the establishment of a new government in Israel mean for the Palestinian people living under occupation? What does it mean for the Palestinian people when one right wing faction takes over from another right wing faction? As is often the case on TWIP, we turn to Ali Abunimah, publisher of the Electronic Intifada, for his answer to the question. Here he is speaking on a news report from Amman, Jordan. In our feature presentation today, we hear from scholar, author, activist and Prof at UCLA, Robin C. Kelly talking about pro-Palestinian campus activism and the pushback by the Israeli Lobby to silence criticism of Israel. He draws attention to the Intersectionality movement, which is linking together the struggles of all oppressed people to stand against Apartheid, colonization, White Supremacy, racism, and Imperialism. This linkage is giving enormous energy to the Palestinian movement, which for too long has suffered in unique isolation. ...

The origin of COVID: Did people or nature open Pandora's box at Wuhan? - Nicholas Wade

June 22, 2021, 8:37 p.m.
Nicholas Wade is a science writer, editor, and author who has worked on the staff of Nature, Science, and, for many years, the New York Times. His May 5, 2021 article in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, asking whether people or nature opened Pandora’s box at Wuhan, generated huge interest and follow-on interviews. In this interview Nicholas Wade covers intriguing questions regarding the remaining mystery of who the original host animal was - and what intermediate animal introduced it to humans. Also - how Donald Trump naming it, without evidence, the China Virus made scientists and media want to support the theory of a natural origin in order to stem the tide of racism. And - to make it even more complex, the thorny issue that the Wuhan Lab, at the time in question, received funding for corona virus research from US taxpayers via a grant from the National Institutes of Health administered by the EcoHealth Alliance. This interview by the British science author and journalist Aditi Prasad was streamed Live on May 31, 2021 on the video channel of the Hindustan Times, an Indian English-language daily newspaper.

Liz King: Civil Rights In Our Public Schools

June 22, 2021, 8:12 p.m.
One front on which the fight for racial justice is being waged is in the area of education. We have been led to believe that education is the great equalizer in this country, but the reality is that Black and Brown students have disparate experiences in school. For example, a national study from the Center for Civil Rights Remedies, issued in 2020, showed that African American students were more than four times as likely to be suspended from school and lost five times as many days of instruction due to disciplinary push-out. How do we stop this, and where is the accountability? This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to Liz King, the Director of Education at the Leadership Council on Civil and Human Rights about efforts to fight discrimination in our nation's public schools. She makes the case for doubling the Department of Education's budget of the Office for Civil Rights, a primary agent in holding school systems accountable for injustices inflicted upon students on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc. She revisits the damage done to public education during the DeVos era, and offers some solutions to help protect students against discrimination in schools.

Still Unreconciled in Canada: A Century of Residential School Horrors

June 22, 2021, 6:04 p.m.
Today on a special episode of the Global Research News Hour, as increasing numbers of Canadians wake up to the reality of the horrors that took place in the residential school system, we hear multiple perspectives about what it all means for the survivors, for settlers, for the foundation of the building of this country and for the prospects of righting relationships and moving forward in a mutually advantageous way. In our first half hour we hear from Professor Niigaan Sinclair about why some Canadians are refusing to associate residential schools with a genocide. Then we hear from Professor David Macdonald about the origins of residential schools and what continues their trend toward violence today. We’ll hear from former United Church Minister Minister Kevin Annett about his own endeavors to correct the record and what is missing from the media’s current reporting. Finally, researcher Richard Sanders shares the secret about FICTIVE CANADA and the role that played in doing nothing in the face of atrocities against Indigenous people.

CLC Showing Signs of Life

June 22, 2021, 8:31 a.m.
A great sigh of relief as, finally, Hassan Yussuf has departed the presidency of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC). He was put into that position by Jerry Dias of UNIFOR to draw the Canadian labour movement into the orbit of the ruling Liberal Party of Canada, which he very nearly did. In the place of the outgoing CLC Executive, convention voted three women into office: Bea Bruske, Lily Chang and Siobhan Vipond. Larry Brown of NUPGE stays on as Executive Vice-President. Phil Taylor interviews Tony Leah, Political Action Chair of UNIFOR Local 222 at General Motors, Oshawa, about the promising resolutions passed at the convention. These include a trio of resolutions in support of Palestine, which passed easily, but weren't reported in the media, plus a wide range of other resolutions including one, opposed by Yussuf, for the CLC to officially to endorse the NDP. This is essential listening for Canadian trade unionists.
