Ramzy Baroud on the prison culture in Palestine

April 2, 2021, 7:08 a.m.
Today we take a long look at the prison culture in Palestine in an interview with Ramzy Baroud, author of the book, These Chains will be Broken. The power of the book, as with this interview, are the individual stories of these incarcerated Palestinians. The injustices inherent in the Israeli Military justice system tell the real story of the horror of living under military occupation. Last Wednesday, Israeli forces arrested five Palestinian children, ranging between the ages of 8 and 13, in the South Hebron Hills as they picked the seasonal wild flowers to bring back home to their families. Eyewitnesses say the children were first attacked by Israeli settlers, and then detained by Israeli soldiers at the settlers’ demand. “This was obviously an attempt by the settlers to intimidate the boys by engaging the soldiers. They didn’t steal or damage anything. All they were doing was picking Akoub, which grows wild in the fields at this time of year. The children committed no crime. ..."

April 1, 2021, 11:43 a.m.
Sonic Café, from 1975 that’s David Bowie, so ahh hey welcome I’m your host Scott Clark and this is episode 232. This time the Sonic Café takes old school as we rewind all the way back to the 1970’s. Our music mix is pulled from the Rolling Stone list of the 500 greatest songs of all time. We’ve just sliced out some of those tunes from the 1970s. Listen for Rod Stewart, The Staple Singers, James Taylor, The Rolling Stones and of course more. We’ll also feature a short documentary of the making of the 10cc song I’m Not In Love, which along with Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which we’ll also play this hour, were among the most incredibly complex audio productions of the 70s. No digital, all analog baby. So all that and of course more as we flashback to the 1970’s with solid gold hits pulled from Rolling Stones list of the 500 greatest songs of all time straight ahead from our little coastal radio café in the Pacific northwest, we’re the Sonic Café.

"Paul R. Griffin - Sowing the Seeds of Racism"

March 31, 2021, 5:10 p.m.
Seeds of Racism in the Soul of America Racism, as a part of the American religious culture, can be traced to the religious concepts of some of the earliest European settlers in North America. Professor Paul R. Griffin explores these roots in his book, “Seeds of Racism in the Soul of America,” linking the concepts in the Puritan belief system to long lasting racist effects. He argues that racism is itself a religion in the United States and is closely related to America Christianity. He claims that efforts to erase racism have failed because they have concentrated on its visible manifestations rather than its ideological character. Paul R. Griffin recommends “The Rage of the Privileged Class,” by Ellis Cose. Originally Broadcast: March 1, 2001

The U.S. owes China and Russia an apology

March 30, 2021, 8:39 p.m.
The two Phils examine two parallel events of mid-March involving US foreign policy: US political leaders Biden and Blinken managed to insult leaders of the two most powerful countries on Earth, namely Russia and China. Last week, President Joe Biden called Russian President Putin "a killer," and claimed he had "no soul." In response, Russia recalled its ambassador to the USA, while Putin termed Biden's words "a projection" of Biden's own characteristics. Also last week, on the way to a summit meeting in Alaska with high officials of the Chinese government, US Secretary of State Blinken leveled sanctions against 21 Chinese government officials. At the summit itself, Blinken talked down arrogantly to the Chinese delegation, Blinken told them that China must accept a rules-based order defined by the U.S. and its allies. For its part, the Chinese delegation refused to accept a subordinate position to the US and reiterated its view that the international order must be based on the UN Charter and international law. The two Phils agreed that apologies are in order from the Biden Administration to both Russia and China.

Tribes from California to Australia are Fighting Wildfire with Fire

March 30, 2021, 12:42 p.m.
For over 100 years, it has been illegal for Indigenous tribes in California to practice traditional burning to prevent catastrophic wildfires. Now, the Karuk Tribe in Humboldt and Siskiyou counties is bringing fire back. Julia Muldavin’s 11 minute film is entitled: This California Tribe Is Fighting Wildfires With Fire. Karuk spokespeople include Herman Albers, and Chook Chook Hillman, Karuk Department of Natural Resources. The film was posted on YouTube in October 2019. Sadly the message and cultural fire practice did not spread fast enough to lessen the catastrophic impact of the 2020 record-setting California wildfire season. It burned 4 1/4 million Acres. In an extraordinary case of symmetry that shows that cultural intentional burning is a shared practice among indigenous peoples - the next segment of this program takes you to Australia. For decades now Aborigine elders and their young students have campaigned to bring back the practice of cultural burning. And they warned if nothing was done to protect the forests, bush and grass lands there would be devastating wildfires across Australia. The world watched in horror and grief when 46 million acres burned in the 2019/2020 fire season and over 1 1/4 billion wild animals perished. ABC, the Australian public broadcast service, produced a moving film entitled: How Indigenous Fire Management Practices Could Protect Bushland. It was posted in the aftermath of the fires in April 2020. This radio program contains excerpts. The guide through the film is Victor Steffensen, author of the 2020 book: Fire Country: How Indigenous Fire Management Could Help Save Australia. The film opens with him setting a humble fire with one match. Victor Steffensen is connected to Aboriginal culture through his mother and two elders who taught him: Tommy George and George Musgrave. In a decade of workshops across a range of different ecosystems, Steffensen advocates for a return to cultural burning and indigenous-led fire and country management.

This week we've got a show about the United States Senate. We'll visit with New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich in an interview he says is "a lot harder than I get from CNN." The Kids Crew find out about his job, how he knows what his constituents want, and what he's doing about the climate crisis. Then, Zen and Amadeus sit down with their Aunt Elsa, a staffer on Senator Heinrich's team. We learn about the filibuster, what happens day to day in a Senators office, and what it's like to be on the staff. This show is mixed with excellent music, and it's a great way to teach and learn US Civics.
