Nithin Coca: Indonesian Coal Crisis

March 28, 2021, 5:59 p.m.
We often associate coal consumption with China and India, countries that have indeed invested heavily into the harmful fuel but flying under the radar is Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous nation which in the past two decades has become one of the world’s leading exporters and consumers of coal. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to global journalist Nithin Coca who has written a series of pieces for Mongabay.com about Indonesia’s alarming headfirst dive into the coal industry. We discuss the high-level corruption that allowed coal to take off in Indonesia, examine the lax regulatory standards that imperil workers while allowing the country to keep export prices low and learn about the environmental degradation that the Indonesian coal boom is causing.

The Decade After Tomorrow

March 28, 2021, 3:29 p.m.
The warming currents of the North Atlantic are the weakest in at least 1600 years. As that ocean breakdown continues with climate change, seas will rise on New England. More vicious winter storms can track toward Britain and Northern Europe. Dr. Levke Caesar is lead author of the new paper warning the world. Meanwhile official international agreements to save us STILL rely on fantasy technology. From the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, scientist Fabian Stenzel says the dream of plantations burning wood for energy would take away life-giving water from billions more humans. Kevin Anderson from the Tyndall Centre tore away the curtain from that BECCS tech on Radio Ecoshock five years ago. Now we have proof. There is no real workable plan to stop extreme climate change, just a global lie at the top. Now you know, and as GI Joe always says, “knowing is half the battle”.

How economics ruins economies #110

March 25, 2021, 11:52 a.m.

"Shari Holman - Not Even the Clothes on Her Back"

March 24, 2021, 10:53 p.m.
In England, in the 1830s, at the time of a major cholera epidemic, a young girl, the orphaned daughter of a prostitute, finds that working in a pottery factory does not earn her enough money for herself and her child. She must work at night like her mother, as a prostitute. Having virtually no money, she rents her dress, and is followed while she walks the streets so that she will not run off with her outfit. She is called a dress lodger. Shari Holman, a native of rural Virginia, and later a resident of Brooklyn, New York, has researched the lives of girls who were dress lodgers in England in the 1830s. She is the author of a book of historical fiction about Gustine, a 15-year-old dress lodger who lived and worked in Sunderland, England in 1831, entitled “The Dress Lodger.” Shari Holman recommends “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down,” by Anne Fadiman. Originally Broadcast: February 6, 2001
