Richard Delaney: Heading Down The Cape

As the author of “Jaws,” Peter Benchley, put it, “You could start now, and spend another forty years learning about the sea without running out of new things to know.” This week’s guest on Sea Change Radio would surely concur. Richard Delaney, the President and CEO of the Center for Coastal Studies, has spent the past forty some-odd years on Cape Cod, striving to understand the fathomless and majestic depths of the ocean. In our discussion, we look at the impact that pollution and climate change are having on the Cape’s fragile ecosystem, how shark, whale and seal populations have been affected, and what these changes mean for the area’s seafood industry. We also note that Delaney’s organization is currently hosting a free online film festival, coincidentally dubbed Sea Change Film Shorts 2020.

Joanna Macy: A Wiser, Braver World

On the Summer Solstice of 2020 Joanna Macy, from her home in Berkeley, spoke at the Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Buddhist monastery had called for Awakened Action and invited Women Leaders to Speak to Race, Poverty, Climate, and the Covid Pandemic. Joanna Macy is an eco-philosopher and a scholar of Buddhism, general systems theory, and deep ecology. Now in her very early nineties she has for decades helped transform despair and apathy into constructive change. As teacher, writer of eight books and antinuclear activist she has created frameworks for personal and social change. Joanna Macy is probably best know as the founder and root teacher of the Work That Reconnects. Meng's rights were violated

Phil asks John Philpot about the arrest of Meng Wanzhou. John explains that the extradition process is pretty straightforward, but what happened to Meng is not. What's disturbing in the procedure in her arrest is that the CBSA and RCMP conspired to deny her rights and illegally searched her electronic devices (which they turned over to the FBI in the USA), and pressured her to reveal her passwords. Also disturbing was the fact that the extradition was politically-motivated by US President Trump, who admitted he was using Meng as a "bargaining chip" in his trade deal with China. Moreover, the US counsel also deliberately withheld evidence, specifically 2 slides of Meng's PowerPoint presentation to HSBC Bank. Another issue was that HSBC may have tried to curry favour with the United States in entrapping Meng because the HSBC was in trouble with the United States government over money laundering, for which it paid an enormous fine to the United States, although no HSBC executives went to jail. Extraterritoriality is a further issue. The crime for which Meng is charged - breaking U.S. sanctions on Iran - is not a crime in Canada. Globalization: The "New" Imperialism

The following talk by progressive scholar and political analyst Michael Parenti was recorded in the year 2000 at the height of the popular global struggle against the World Trade Organization (WTO). Given the recent renegotiation of NAFTA under Donald Trump in order to better serve the interests of the American capitalist class and the promise of Joe Biden to re-commit the United States to free trade and a so-called "rules based" global order, the subject of this talk is more relevant than ever. The American Empire is the current sword and shield of global capitalism and the Fortune 500, enforcing its interests against defiant countries via economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, political destabilization and military aggression. Capitalism must always expand and it therefore seeks to dominate and exploit the land, labor and resources of every corner of the globe. This is the true nature of what is called "globalization", and it follows that the struggle against capitalism and empire must be international as well.

Western Colonialists Protect Their Puppet Ouattara in Ivory Coast

Phil interviews Jean-Hilaire Yapi of the Ivorian Congress of Canada on the results of the Ivory Coast elections. Jean-Hilaire calls the election rigged and illegal. In the first place, President Ouattara was not eligible to run because the constitution did not permit a presidential third term. Jean-Hilaire accuses Ouattara of hijacking state power in Ivory Coast. 85 people died at the hands of state police, and masked militiamen, during the elections. Opposition leaders have disappeared. Only 10% of the people actually voted, although Ouattara's election commission claims that 54% of the people voted. Phil notes that the former UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, intervened militarily and illegally in the internal affairs of Ivory Coast to put Ouattara, a business-friendly candidate, in power ten years ago. The Ivory Coast has gold, oil, gas and is the world's largest producer of cocoa. France is the former colonial power and still aims to control Ivory Coast and other West African countries. Currently, 10,000 Ivory Coast residents have fled as refugees to neighbouring countries.
