A Founding Generation of Looters

Nov. 5, 2020, 7:43 p.m.
In this new book, Israeli historian Adam Raz shatters the “conspiracy of silence” that surrounds the widespread Jewish looting of Palestinian property that took place in 1948. Drawing from materials he found in more than 30 archives, Raz documents how in the period around the 1948 War, Jewish civilians – who after the war became the founding generation of the state of Israel – pillaged private Palestinian property throughout the land. Raz also documents how, as the looting took place in full public view, Jewish leaders – including David Ben Gurion – knew what was happening and, even as some expressed disapproval, did nothing to stop it. As Raz observes, having robbed their neighbors, Israeli civilians became “accomplices to the political situation,” with a “vested interest” in preventing their former neighbors from ever returning.

TBR 201106 — Most Evil Persons in History Award Nomination #5

Nov. 5, 2020, 7:15 a.m.
This week’s radio show was somewhat challenging since it will be posted the day after the election but at the time of recording we had no idea what was going to happen. Therefore, we provide some takeaways that are relevant regardless of election results — and for the feature piece this week we nominate Roy Cohn for the Official Thunderbolt Most Evil Persons in History Award. Mr. Cohn is only the fifth nominee to earn this dubious distinction. Yes — welcome to The Thunderbolt, where we are constantly being forced to remove our tongues from our cheeks.

Sonic Cafe #212/Scary Great Cover Tunes You'll Dig!

Nov. 5, 2020, 5:14 a.m.
Sonic Café, that’s the music of the Heimatdamisch, a German polka band with a really cool cover of the Guns n’ Roses tune Sweet Child of Mine. So ahh how you doin’? I’m your host Scott Clark and this is episode 212. This time, if you have not already guessed, the Sonic Café roles through another mix of cover tunes so great they’re scary. We’ll hear from Lake Street Dive, DiVinyls, Weezer, Son of Dave, Placebo and many more, as they cover songs from the last 40 years. Then latter we’ll check in with comedian Robert Mac, with the closest thing you’ll ever hear to a weather forecast at the Sonic Café. And finally a germ free welcome to our latest sponsor, listen for a word from Pontious Advanced Hand Sanitizer. Pontious, it’s time to sanitize everything! All that along with some other neat stuff too, as we roll into another hour of cover tunes so great they’re scary, from that little café in the Pacific Northwest that features music, comedy and pop culture that’s distinctly anti, big corporate, radio. We’re the Sonic Café.

Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 199 The Waiting

Nov. 4, 2020, 8:22 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another two months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Why Mothers Worry About Their Children

Nov. 4, 2020, 6:18 p.m.
Radio Curious discusses the psychology of motherhood with Jana Malamud Smith, a psychologist and author of “A Potent Spell: Mother Love and the Power of Fear.” Is the concept of “mother blame” a method to control women? Is motherhood a really a fearsome job? Will a mother’s mistake or inattention damage a child? Is this different from the fear that fathers have about the safety of their children? These questions are answered by guest Jana Malamud Smith in her book “A Potent Spell: Mother Love and the Power of Fear.” She is a clinical psychotherapist and daughter of writer Bernard Malamud. Smith argues that the fear of losing a child is central to motherhood, and mostly overlooked as a historical force that has induced mothers throughout time to shape their own lives to better shelter their young, at the expense of their own future. I spoke with Dr. Janna Malamud Smith from her home in Massachusetts, and asked her to begin by discussing the different level of feat that fathers and mothers have toward their children. The book Janna Malamud Smith recommends is “Biography of Samuel Pepys” by Clair Tomilin. Originally broadcast: February 18, 2003.

Whether It is Trump or Biden, Cuba Will Stay on the Socialist Path

Nov. 4, 2020, 8:49 a.m.
Phil interviews Keith Bolender about the effect of the U.S. election upon Cuba. Trump's regressive policies have caused a lot of hardship for Cubans, to the point of creating food insecurity, all compounded by COVID-19. Obama's strategy was to open up to Cuba in order to persuade the Cuban people of the advantages of US society, and thereby win the Cuban people away from support for their communist government. After all, 50 years of applying unsuccessfully the stick against Cuba, Obama resolved to offer a carrot instead.

In Memory of Robert Fisk

Nov. 3, 2020, 10:44 p.m.
Robert Fisk, the award winning war correspondent and dean of Middle East journalists died in Dublin on October 30. He was only 74. Robert Fisk won more British journalism awards than any of his peers, including British Foreign Reporter of the Year seven times and the Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism in 2002. The New York Times described him as “probably the most famous foreign correspondent in Britain.” And that in spite of his principle of speaking truth to power. Fisk reported for the London Independent on Israel’s invasion of Lebanon, the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, and Syria, without sparing responsibility of the United States and his native Britain for so much of the carnage. He became one of very few Western foreign correspondents to interview Osama bin Laden in the 1990s, years before the Saudi-born al-Qaeda founder became globally famous. And you will hear him in the upcoming program describe that experience. In this talk, recorded in November 2002 he talks about the hidden reasons of the Bush administration for going to war against Iraq, about the 911 connection to future wars, and about the aftermath of Afghanistan and his meeting with Osama bin Laden.
