"The First Idea: How Symbols, Language and Intelligence Evolved from Our Primate Ancestors to Modern Humans," is a book by professors Stanley Greenspan and Stuart Shanker. Their hypotheses assert that our ability to use symbols and language depends on specific types of nurturing interactions and other cultural practices have been passed down and thus learned anew and further developed by each generation, dating back to prehuman and even nonhuman primate cultures. I spoke with Professor Shanker about these and other topics.

In The Name of Humanity, We Refuse To Accept a Fascist America. Ashley Dawson, How to Stop a Coup; Carl Dix, Take to the Streets!

Nov. 10, 2020, 10:32 p.m.
People feel that a heavy rock has been lifted off their neck. They can breathe, and hope. Of this there can be no doubt. All this makes the message of the two guests on this show more relevant. The people need to intervene, as they did in the spring and summer as they protested police murders of people of color. Those who took to the streets all over the US need to return to the streets.

Gabe Brown - Brown's Ranch in North Dakota - Part One

Nov. 10, 2020, 6:59 p.m.
Interview by Jesse Frost on the No-Till Growers Podcast On May 4, 2020, Jesse Frost had a farmer to farmer conversation with Gabe Brown on Regenerative Agriculture. In the current emergency, that is caused by climate change and the Corona Virus pandemic, a movement among farmers brings inspiration and hope to those who are looking for healthy food and techniques of farming without chemicals. Instead of adding to carbon dioxide pollution by industrial farming and animal raising techniques, farmers like Gabe Brown and Jesse Frost are exploring ways of actually bringing carbon dioxide down from the air and back into the soil. Every year the Food and Agriculture Organization in the United Nations is celebrating World Soil Day on December 5. In 2020 their message is especially urgent: Soil erosion must be stopped ‘to save our future’, says the agriculture agency. Approximately 75 billion tons of topsoil are lost each year from global agriculture production. In this context No Till agriculture has become an inspiration. It is a method practiced in most indigenous cultures and was re-introduced to industrial societies in the 1940s. In 1990, approximately 6% of the farmland in America was being farmed using no till practices. By 2016 the percentage had risen to 35%. Thanks for the recording to Jesse Frost and his No-Till Market Garden Podcast. In addition to off grid farming Jesse practices cooking and journalism, contributing to The Atlantic, Modern Farmer, and Civil Eats.

Rebecca Leber: A Brand New Day

Nov. 10, 2020, 3:29 p.m.
The New York Times recently compiled a list of 104 environmental protections that the Trump administration has rolled back in four short years — they include major climate policies as well as rules that ensured clean air and water, preserved wildlife, and regulated toxic chemicals. With the election of Joe Biden, however, many are hoping for a dramatic and immediate reversal. This week on Sea Change Radio, we unpack some of the key items on our environmental wishlist for the incoming Biden Administration with Mother Jones reporter Rebecca Leber. We talk about restoring our standing in the world by re-entering the Paris Climate Agreement, look at possible variations of a Green New Deal, and ponder what can be done with or without Democratic control of the Senate.

Biden means same imperial policy and China demonization

Nov. 9, 2020, 7:32 p.m.
Phil Taylor and Stephen Gowans discuss the meaning of Joe Biden's electoral victory. Gowans, like Syria's President Assad, argues that the U.S. President functions as a CEO. They can decide how a company pursues a goal, but ultimately a new CEO must pursue the same goals as those previous. Wealthy investors influence foreign policy almost as directly as shareholders demand dividends. Despite divisions between Democrats and Republicans, both parties agree on U.S. "leadership" of the world, and punishment of countries that demonstrate independence. Biden already wrote in Foreign Affairs that he intends for America to "lead" the world. And what that means is breaking down barriers that restrict American profits, creating a "level playing field" in which America dominates. China, therefore, irritates Biden and his backers, because it is using subsidies to give its businesses a competitive edge. You think "Buy American" is a Trumpism? It, along with "America First" may as well be a Biden trademark, as well. And the plan is to confront China over its "human rights violations" against Muslims, which apparently China is committing and not the United States. The U.S. is oppressing all of Arabia by propping up vicious, anti-democratic dictatorships. It has terrorized and murdered millions of Muslims in the past 20 years along, under the guise of the "War on Terror." But the U.S. has created a "dark legend" about Uighurs in China. What we aren't told is that the U.S. supports violent jihadism in Xinjiang, as they do in many parts of the world. And you can draw a direct comparison between how the U.S. managed these groups in Syria, as they do now in Xinjiang. Unlike the U.S. approach, China has engaged in every means to provide opportunities for people in Xinjiang to climb the ladder, with subsidies and protections of every sort. If we look at this from a class perspective and a materialist perspective, as China does, there is a root cause of poverty that is generating discontent. Western China has not been able to develop as fast as Eastern China. The measures taken to promote growth and prosperity in Xinjiang have been recognized by Muslim countries, such as Indonesia. But a bunch of hyper-partisan 'foundations,' often run by religious bigots, are colouring our perceptions of Western China.

Herman's Radio & Record Room #10

Nov. 9, 2020, 4:53 p.m.
My dad Herman Frederick Moe was a radio & TV repairman and electrician, a country & western "cowboy singer" and rustic guitar player. He performed in the late 1930’s on live radio before he enlisted in World War II as a radio-telephone technician. This show is my homage to him. My father loved the other side of radio as well – the listening side – it kept him company during many lonesome nights in the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s & 60's. From my imagination to your ears – it’s WHFM – vintage music from mid century America. This is music that I believe he would have enjoyed.
