#663 -- COVID-19 and the End of Capitalism

Nov. 14, 2020, 9:49 a.m.
Capitalism is a fatally flawed economic system that cannot be made to work well, argues economist Richard D. Wolff. One fatal flaw is its instability: for the past 300 years, capitalist economies have crashed every 4-7 years. We are now in the third crash of the 21st century, the worst since the 1920s. The poor US response to COVID--and the right-on-schedule crash COVID triggered--make the system's failures undeniable, Wolff argues. Wolff is in fine form in these selections from an interview (of 9-15-2020) with the Progressive Canadian video blogger, Mexie. (Cont'd)

Censorship of speakers, forums, and organizing efforts by pro Palestinian organizations on US university campuses

Nov. 12, 2020, 8:39 p.m.
We spend a good deal of time on This Week In Palestine analyzing and exposing the efforts of the Israeli Lobby to counter attempts by Palestinian organizations and voices to educate and organize on behalf of the Palestinian people who dare to resist the occupation of the Palestinian homeland by the Israeli military. One of the major efforts of this Israeli project is the censorship of speakers, forums, and organizing efforts by pro Palestinian organizations on US university campuses. It is a frightening, well-financed, assault on free speech and academic freedom. But it goes well beyond the campaigns fueled by the Israeli Lobby, it also includes dark money from the far right using censorship techniques to advance the far right agenda and silence criticism from the left. It has penetrated the classroom as well as other campus forums and extracurricular activities. Today we examine this phenomenon through a webinar held at Umass Boston featuring three of its professors, Heike Shotten, Leila Farsakh and Andrew Leong, joined by Trinity University professor, Isaac Kamola. Prof Heike Shotten begins with introductions.

Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another two months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Sonic Cafe #213/Something About Millennials

Nov. 12, 2020, 6:37 a.m.
Sonic Café, I gotta a feeling that was the Black Eyed Peas and you know I was right. I’m Scott Clark, welcome to episode 213. Millennials, born between 1981 and 2000, and stereotyped as self absorbed, obsessed with selfies, technology and social media, and untrusting of their Baby Boomer parents. Which sounds very similar to just about any proceeding generation to us, accept for the social media part. The oldest millennial is now on the edge of 40, so technically they’re no longer the youngsters, because generation Z, or whatever they’re called, is hot on their heels. So maybe everyone should welcome them to the establishment and quit picking on them… well maybe not quite yet, because this time the Sonic Café presents something about millennials, the stereotypes, and tunes they rocked out to as kids. Listen for Lady Gaga, Cold Play, Maroon 5, Gwen Stefani and many more. We’ll also listen in on an actual millennial job interview, then check in with comedian and English major Michael Palascak to see how his job search is going, and finally, in our OK Boomer segment, comedian Orny Adams, will tell us what it was like back in the day. All that and probably more as we present something about millennials, this time from that little café on the breathtaking Pacific coast, we’re the Sonic Café.

I spoke with Professor Shanker about these and other topics.
