Venice, San Francisco, Climate-wrecking (replay)
Aug. 16, 2020, 3:47 p.m.
Think about the great cities about to be lost as seas rise on a warming planet. That is Venice, and our guests Gray Brechin and Luca Muscara take us there, to the battleground between human history and climate change. But we go further into the killing role of great cities and lessons for our future from the New Deal. I'm Alex Smith. Let's explore time and place on Radio Ecoshock.

TBR 200814 — Metacognitive Dissonance 2X
Aug. 14, 2020, 10:04 a.m.
This weekâs Thunderbolt starts off by exploring the âDunning-Kruger Effectâ, wherein some people are utterly incapable of judging the level of their own utter incompetence â and so, in order to be truly objective, for this weekâs show, we have assumed that Mr. Thunderbolt himself suffers from the Dunning-Kruger effect â and we report accordingly!
For instance: We start right off by pointing out some of the good things about the Rump presidency! A high bar indeed!
Then, when we report on how California State Assembly Leader Anthony Rendon (a Democrat) has single-handedly killed a bill that would have introduced single payer health care for the residents of the State of California â and in compensation for my Dunning-Kruger effect, we then point out how that is actually a good thing too!
After that we expose the numerous false flag attacks happening in relation to the Syrian madness â and how the Rump even tried to issue a false flag warning about an upcoming false flag attack â and how due to our âDunning-Krugerâ symptoms, we simply didnât know up until now how even that is actually a good thing as well! Happy, happy!
The Toothless Old Grandpa describes how the Rump â or any president, for that matter â is largely helpless when it comes to shaping American foreign policy â a good thing (unless your foreign policy is being shaped by a criminal gang of psychopathic murderers, anywayâ¦)
Next, we celebrate a noted Northwest icon, the Banana Slug! Stand proud, Cascadia! Weâre the only place thatâs got em!
For the title piece this week, we describe how the Rump is sharpening the skills of foreign diplomats by challenging them to explore their creative instincts whilst attempting to gain the ear of anyone in the Rumpâs administration â and then we encapsulate our âDunning-Krugerâ episode of the Thunderbolt by riffing on George H.W. Bushâs presidential campaign slogan in 1988: âDonât worry! Be happy!â
Then we switch gears and end this weeks News & Commentary section with a contemplation upon the fact that love is a verb â and that verbs require action. (Dunning-Kruger notwithstanding.)
Curves, swerves, and unexpected detours in this weekâs Thunderbolt! Fasten your seat beltsâ¦
True Crime Investigators UK: The Michael Pritchard Murder
Aug. 14, 2020, 4:08 a.m.
In the new episode of âTrue Crime Investigators UKâ, we look at the tragic death of Michael Pritchard, a delivery driver for Business Express in the Staffordshire and Derbyshire area. Who on Wednesday the 12th November 1997, was murdered by a young man who tried to steal his van and in doing so, ran him over and killed him.
The murder is still undetected and as John was originally the family liaison officer in the case; this is still an investigation that he often thinks about. We hope by looking further into what happened on that day and talking to Michaelâs widow Hilary, we can tell you more about their story and ask you to help us catch the people responsible.

Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 187 Slow and Low
Aug. 12, 2020, 8:45 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another five months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

What Game is Macron Playing in Lebanon Crisis?
Aug. 12, 2020, 6:18 p.m.
The recent cataclysm in Beirut is being used by the usual neo-colonial suspects to try and pin the blame for the catastrophe on Hezbollah.
Hezbollah, of course, had nothing whatever to do with the disaster since it had no influence in the Port of Beirut. Hezbollah is a popular movement in Lebanon, responsible for driving the Israelis out of the country over a period of 18 years of armed struggle (1982-2000).
Today, Hezbollah is a very popular political party in many parts of the country, and a large party of the majority bloc in the Lebanese Parliament. Hezbollah is also part of the Resistance Front versus Israel and the USA, a front that also includes Iraq and Syria.
Just hours after the cataclysm, President Macron of France made a triumphal tour of the ruins in the port. He promised aid, but "NO BLANK CHEQUES." He demanded that the Lebanese pledge to reform their government first. Apparently, Macron has forgotten that France, as the post-WWI occupier of Lebanon, created a sectarian confessional form of government that ensured that minority Christians would remain in power and no national unity would ever emerge.
Lebanese and Western foreign media immediately lauded Macron and suggested that France assume control of Lebanon under trusteeship.
Lebanon has been under political and economic attack long before the Beirut explosion. Macron's visit may be a foot-in-the-door for a Western humanitarian intervention under the guise of "aid," something similar to the turning of Libya into a failed state in 2011. The French and Western actions towards Lebanon should be understood in the context of destabilization efforts that have toppled a number of West Asian countries in recent years.
Hours after the explosion, hundreds of Syrian ambulances filled the highways into Lebanon, although Syria itself is under Western attack. The Syrian government also dispatched planeloads of supplies to the Lebanese Red Cross. Contrast this to Canadian PM Trudeau, who said he would send a few million in aid to Lebanon, but not to the government or Red Cross. Instead, it would only go to "Trusted NGOs."
It should be remembered, in the words of Syrian President Assad, that the day on which France was pushed out of Lebanon was the day it began conspiring to return.
Wagner, Sally Roesch — Suffragist, Matilda Gage, Almost Jailed for Voting
Aug. 12, 2020, 1:43 p.m.
This program is about Matilda Joslyn Gage, who lived from 1826 to 1892 and was a vibrant and leading figure in the suffragist movement of that century.
Matilda Joslyn Gage, an outspoken leader for womenâs rights, and an advocate to abolish slavery and religious bigotry, became historically invisible in pursuit of her liberty to think and speak as she thought proper. She was threatened with jail for voting in New York in 1871, and later was inducted into the Iroquois nation after publicly declaring Christian theology to be a primary source of the oppression of women.
Historian and chautauqua scholar Sally Roesch Wagner, who portrays Matilda Joslyn Gage, brought Gage into the limelight by creating the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, based in Fayetteville, New York. The Gage Foundation is dedicated to educating current and future generations about Gageâs work and the power of her work to drive contemporary social change.
I met with Sally Roesch Wagner in the studios of Radio Curious in December 1996. Our conversation began when I welcomed Matilda Joslyn Gage to Radio Curious.
The book Matilda Joslyn Gage recommends is âThe Secret Doctrine: The Synthesis of Science, Religion and Philosophy,â by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky.
The book Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner recommends is âWomen, Church and State,â by Matilda Joslyn Gage.
This program was recorded in December 1996.
