A roll-call from the United Nations on Hong Kong

July 10, 2020, 8:24 p.m.
Cuba spoke on behalf of 53 countries to deliver a joint statement on non-interference in the affairs of sovereign states. In asserting sovereignty in Hong Kong, China is fulfilling its responsibility as a state to ensure stability during a time of foreign interference. It is evident that many countries support China's position. It is the West's gang that opposes China's actions. Those who talk about 'democracy for Hong Kong' forget that HK had no democracy during the entire period of white colonial rule. The entire nation-state of China now needs stability and security in order to become modern and advanced. Our Canadian politicians have further clarified the issue for us: Canada has to play along with whatever the U.S. wants on China.

Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another five months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Dr. Victoria Patterson - Native American Life, Before and After Europeans Part 2

July 8, 2020, 4:15 p.m.
Cultures that have no written language pass on their histories through oral traditions. The stories are the way that social values and traditions are taught by one generation to the next. Animals often play a significant character role in these stories. In the Native American traditions of the northwest part of California, the coyote is a very popular character. Dr. Victoria Patterson, an anthropologist based in Ukiah, California, has worked with native peoples for over 30 years. She knows these stories, and she sees them as windows, allowing us to imagine how original native peoples of northern California thought and lived. I met with Dr. Victoria Patterson and asked her about the significance of the story where the coyote jumped off into the sky. Our discussion lead to a two-part program, originally broadcast in February of 1999. Dr, Victoria Patterson recommends “Deep Valley,” by Bernard W. Aginsky and “Under the Tuscan Sun,” by Frances Mayes. Originally Broadcast: February 16, 1999 and February 26, 1999

Edward Said: Palestine and the Universality of Human Rights (Part TWO of TWO)

July 7, 2020, 3:37 p.m.
As I’m preparing this archival program for rebroadcast at the end of June, 2020, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to announce his government’s annexation of major areas of the Israeli-Occupied Palestinian West Bank. This is Prof. Edward Said’s last major speech on Palestine given at UC Berkeley seven months before his death on September 25, 2003. He was born in Jerusalem in 1935, lived in exile in the US and was professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. In this conclusion of his speech Edward Said gave a report on GAZA, still under military occupation. He also referred to the first and second Intifada, the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation, and the beginning of the building of the separation wall. The building of Israeli settlements, the major cause of conflict and suffering, continues to this day. By July 2020 more than 800,000 settlers are estimated to live in 150 exclusively Jewish settlements in the Occupied Palestinian West Bank including East Jerusalem all of which are considered to be in violation of international law by the International Court of Justice. The West Bank is home to 2.16 Palestinians. Since Said spoke in 2003 many analysts and even some governments have pointed to international law codified in the Fourth Geneva Convention that states: “The occupying power shall not … transfer parts of its own population into the territories it occupies.” Article 49 of that same convention also protects the legal right of Palestinians to resist the Israeli occupation. Said ends with a very personal description of the healing collaboration between him and the Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim. The youth orchestra that they founded together in 1999 to bring Palestinians and Israelis together still performs in 2020.

Paul Wheaton Pt. I: Home Heating Solutions

July 6, 2020, 8:07 p.m.
Many of us are spending a whole lot more time at home these days, and are consequently knee-deep in a bunch of home improvement projects. A great area for home improvement that may not be on your mind in July, but will surely be a pressing concern in a few months when those utility bills begin to rise, is heating. This week on Sea Change Radio, the first half of our discussion with author and sustainability expert Paul Wheaton about his new book, How To Build A Better World In Your Backyard. He outlines some innovative ideas on home efficiency, including warming up our bodies rather than the air in our homes, and the advantages of using a rocket mass heater. We also touch upon next week's topic, gardening and permaculture.

Israel's brutal murder of Ahmed Erakat; Zionist attempts ...

July 6, 2020, 10:28 a.m.
We begin this week with the voice of Noura Erakat, a frequent guest on This Week In Palestine. She is a Palestinian attorney and professor at Rutgers University, and the cousin of Ahmed Erakat. Ahmed, 27, was recently gunned down and left unattended to bleed to death at a checkpoint on the West Bank, on his way to pick up his sister on her wedding day. He himself was to be married in the very near future. That checkpoint, like many others, cannot even remotely be claimed to protect Israelis from Palestinians. Its entire purpose is to make life more difficult for Palestinians traveling within non-Israeli Palestine. We present this story's recent coverage on Amy Goodman's Democracy Now. We then return to the ongoing story of the attempts by the Zionist Lobby to silence voices critical of Israel on US Campuses across this country. It doesn’t end. And our coverage of this struggle will not end as long as it continues. Today we feature Prof Hatem Bazian of the University of California in Berkeley, along with two members of Students for Justice in Palestine at Tufts University discussing this assault on free speech with Dale Sprusansky, editor of the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs.
