Jonathan Harr - Toxic Water, A Book

A Civil Action
Water, a necessary element to our survival is expected to be pure, safe and clean when it comes into our home. When it is polluted, the results can be extreme. The people in the town of Woburn, Massachusetts, just west of Boston, had an unusually high rate of cancer in the early 1970s. The townâs water was contaminated with industrial pollutants. Several children and adults became very sick and some died. Their families sued the polluters in the U.S. Federal Court. Jonathan Harr, a non-fiction writer, followed the process and wrote a book telling the story of what happened. He called it, âA Civil Action.â A movie, also called âA Civil Action,â was based on the book and released at the end of 1998. I spoke by phone with Jonathan Harr, from his home in Massachusetts, a month after the movie was released and asked him how he was able to capture what occurred and create âA Civil Action.â

The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another five months of episodes. While some people would think it extreme to refer to the Chicago Police Department as "Murder Incorporated" a survey of its tolerance for dishonest cops and racist injustice that normalized for decades police killings, false charges and perjured testimony, winked at by Chicago officials, supports the characterization.
The Stop Police Crimes campaign and ongoing demonstrations following George Floyd's murder have witnessed a sea change in outrage driven protest at the too long ignored white supremacist structural injustice at the core of the business model which the police are used to protect.

On July second, 2020, the economist and former Finance Minister of Greece, Yanis Varoufakis, gave a webinar on how the current collapse of the world economy might change capitalism forever by challenging the survival of private banking and the functioning of the stock exchange.
Varoufakisâ thesis reminded me of a headline in the Sept. 2019 New Yorker from Bill McKibbens divestment campaign. It said: Money Is the Oxygen on Which the Fire of Global Warming Burns. What would it be like to abandon not just a particular investment by a bank but the whole banking system?

Amer Zahr gives voice to the resiliency and resistance of Palestinians against great odds

It's a difficult time for Palestinians, but then again, under occupation, it's always a difficult time for Palestinians. That is why we continue to marvel at the resiliency and passion for their land that seems to buoy them to continue their resistance against great odds. We certainly see that in Amer Zahr, our presenter this week, who gives voice to that resiliency and resistance of his people.
Amer Zahr is an Arab-American comedian, speaker, writer, academic, and adjunct professor of Law. He draws on his experiences growing up as a child of Palestinian immigrant parents, performing and lecturing on topics like politics, society, Islam, growing up Arab, and more.
