President Jimmy Carter - Life After the Presidency

June 24, 2020, 11:26 p.m.
The Virtues of Aging Considering the alternatives, growing older is really not all that bad. The frame of mind that we develop and carry with us as we age controls much of how we feel and behave. James Earl Carter Jr., more often known as Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the US, is the author of a book called, “The Virtues of Aging.” President Carter’s book covers issues from Social Security and medical expenses to the importance of staying active and involved. I spoke with President Jimmy Carter by phone, in the fall of 1998, and I asked him what prompted him to write the book. President Jimmy Carter recommends “The Age Wave: How the Most Important Trend of Our Time Can Change Your Future,” by Ken Dychtwald. Originally Broadcast: December 4, 1998

Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 180_Oklahoma

June 24, 2020, 10:04 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another 6 months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Putin calls for steps to preserve UN integrity and world peace

June 23, 2020, 8:38 p.m.
Putin recently authored a long article on the lessons of the 75th anniversary of the defeat of Nazism in WWII. He is calling for a meeting of leaders of the P5 countries, indicating that there is a serious problem affecting peace and stability in the world. He writes that the three wartime leaders of the Allied powers laid down a mechanism for the greater powers to maintain peace for 75 years. The veto of permanent members of the UN Security Council are the only reasonable alternative to a major conflict between great powers, who should seek compromises instead. Calls for eliminating veto powers would reduce the UN to the League of Nations irrelevancy. Moreover, Western media failed us completely on Putin's speech. This was an important essay by a major world figure calling for collective action at this critical moment.

This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak to design expert and environmental journalist Lloyd Alter about innovation and adaptation in the COVID-19 era. We talk about the hurdles we are collectively facing when it comes to things like sky scrapers, air conditioning, and commuting - things that people, including experts, not too long ago took for granted.

Reclaiming Native American History: The Yuki of Thule Valley

June 23, 2020, 3:16 p.m.
The events of 2020, the toppling of statues and discoveries of hidden history reminded me of events in early 2000 - soon after I moved my radio production and micro power transmitter to Mendocino County. The State Historic Marker at the entrance to the Round Valley Indian Reservation in Northern CA read: “This valley was discovered by Frank M. Asbill arriving from Eden Valley, on May 15, 1854. During the same year, Charles Kelsey from Clear Lake also visited it, and George E White sighted it from Blue Nose” There is another account of the history of that day that is undisputed fact but forgotten. On May 15, 1854, the Yuki, inhabitants of the valley for over 12000 years, discovered six white men on their land. Led by Pierce Asbill the men opened fire and killed 40 of them. The Asbills returned a year later and captured 35 Yuki women and sold them as slaves to gold miners. In the Spring of 2000 an effort was begun to rewrite the language on the Marker and officially re-cast the bronze plaque. TUC Radio joined the groups in the Fall of 2000, just in time for the first public meeting at the American Legion Hall in Round Valley. Descendants of the original Yuki people had come as well as Wylaki whose great grandparent had been force marched to the valley by the cavalry. This is a moving collection of authentic voices - much spoken from the heart. All have the ambience of their circumstances, the echo of the Legion Hall, a speaker hiding from the microphone, hesitating to be heard. Kitchen noises from the North Fork Cafe. Ranchers leaning against the back wall remarking that the Indians had crossed the line. But on March 21, 2002, California Registered Historical Landmark No. 674 was replaced with this: “The first inhabitants of Round Valley were the Yuki who resided here for thousands of years in harmony with their natural surroundings. In 1854, European settlers entered the valley. In 1856, conflicts between settlers and Yuki escalated and to protect local tribes the entire watershed was designated a reservation. Additional tribes were subsequently forced on the property: Nomlacki, Wylaki, Lassik, Sinkyone, Pomo (including Cahto, Kabeyo, Shodakai, Yokayo, Shokawa, Shanel, Kashaya, and Habenapo among others), Wappo, Concow Maidu, Colusa, and Achumawi. In 1864, the government reduced the reservation by four-fifths, to its current size.” And even this improvement leaves more opportunities for the future.

The Israelization of US Police

June 21, 2020, 6:52 p.m.
Policing in America is under intense scrutiny in the wake of continuing demonstrations and non-violent displays of rage over the shooting of unarmed Black people. The restructuring of policing and our understanding of safety and security are at the heart of that scrutiny. The militarized, discriminatory practice of policing which is geared to control society has not and will not provide security and safety for everyone in that society. How did we get to this warped concept of security and safety, and whom does it serve? We know whom it does not serve and we must find a way forward to create a just, safe, secure society for everyone. How did we get where we are and who is fueling this militarized, discriminatory policing of America? Jeff Halper has meticulously researched the issue, and in particular the role Israel is playing in arming the security state. His book, War Against the People, is a must read and serves as the basis for an article he recently wrote on the intersection of policing in America and Israel. We lead this morning with the reading of Halper’s recent article we found in Mondoweiss. After this, our feature presentation which today is a conversation between British journalist Steven Sacker and Hamas spokesman Ghazi Hamad, who speaks from Gaza. The conversation was recorded in March and takes place on Sacker’s podcast called Hardtalk. Sacker continually reveals his all-too-common ignorance about Hamas, Palestine, the Great March, etc.
