Sept. 12, 2020, 12:54 p.m.
An African-American & Latinx History of the U.S. & the Ongoing Struggle Against White Supremacy/White Nationalism Paul Ortiz is professor of history at the University of Florida and is Director of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program. Hes authored Remembering Jim Crow, Emancipation Betrayed: The Hidden History of Black Organizing and White Violence in Florida from Reconstruction to the Bloody Election of 1920, and the epic An African American and Latinx History of the United States. Paul Ortiz provides the essential framework for understanding how freedom struggles dating back to the eighteenth century inform todays entrenched inequality and systemic racism across diasporas. Prof. Ortiz by reconceptualizing American has dug deep to reveal the roots of white supremacy and white nationalism and by unearthing them he offers proposals to weed them out root and branch. Ortiz also excites and stimulates as he recounts the tools that were forged by the freedom fighters he writes about whose sojourn left footprints for us to follow to complete the journey towards realizing the promise of democracy

Palestinian Rap artist Tamer Nafar, one of the founders of the celebrated Palestinian Rap group DAM

Sept. 11, 2020, 11:06 a.m.
Today, increasingly, Rappers and Hip Artists are viewed as modern day truth tellers lauded and sometimes taunted for telling it like it is. Their dissection of our various cultures is often prophetic. After years of struggle Rap and Hip Hop artists have assumed their well-earned place in our artistic culture. Today we feature a conversation with Palestinian Rap artist, Tamer Nafar, one of the founders of the celebrated Palestinian Rap group, DAM, whose truth telling has created great controversy within Israeli society. Nafer and DAM are from the Arabic community in Lyd, Israel. It is in the belly of the beast, so to speak, that they speak truth to power through their rap. Here is Tamer Nafar speaking on Palestinian Podcast with its host, Salim Barameh.

Spencer Wells- The Unforeseen Cost of Civilization

Sept. 10, 2020, 6:17 p.m.
In this edition of Radio Curious we revisit a conversation with Spencer Wells about his book, “Pandora’s Seed: The Unforeseen Cost of Civilization,” published in 2010. Our interview is a follow-up to a 2003 conversation about his book, "The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey," in which Wells traces our routes as small bands of hunter-gatherers when our ancestors walked out of Africa approximately 60,000 years ago and began populating the world. “Pandora’s Seed” tells the story of what we humans, with our hunter-gatherer biological construct have created in the past 10,000 years. These multiple life style changes have produced what we call “civilization,” with systems and mechanisms that will not allow us to continue the life-styles that are emulated by many people world-wide, and exploited by those who have access to them. In other words, we can’t last much longer doing what we are doing without radically reducing the way we all live, if not outright killing our species. Spencer Well is an Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C., where he leads the Genographic Project, which is collecting and analyzing hundreds of thousands of DNA samples from people around the wold in order to decipher how our ancestors populated the world. He is also a professor a Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. In this interview with Spencer Wells, recorded on July 19, 2010, we began by describing the changes necessary for our species survival. The book Spencer Wells recommends is “The Histories," by Herodotus, a 5th century B.C. Greek historian.

Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 191 Panic

Sept. 10, 2020, 1:15 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another five months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Sonic Café that’s Hot Chip covering Transmission the 1979 Joy Division tune, so hey welcome to another hour of our radio transmission from the Sonic Café. I’m your host Scott Clark and this is episode 204. This time the Sonic Café travels into the world of Jay Ward’s Fractured Fairytales as we present the tale of the three little pigs. Now there’s no huffing and puffing in this version, and our wolf isn’t big, nor bad. In fact his name is Hank and like the original tale Hank doesn’t get exactly what he’s expecting, but sure gets what’s coming to him. So yah, our tale is wrapped in a music mix pulled from just about 50 years. Listen for Genesis, the Bombay Bicycle Club, Franz Ferdinand, Flunk, World Party The Jayhawks and of course many more as we bring you another hour of intelligent, eclectic radio that thumbs it’s nose at big corporate radio by bringing you a radio transmission where the music really matters. We’re the Sonic Café.
