Sept. 2, 2020, 9:29 p.m.
The NBA players took a political stand against racist police brutality, stopping the championship playoffs. It is remarkable that professional athletes would take such a step. Their action indicates how severe the issue of racial discrimination has become. In a way, these athletes have become political leaders in a country where the ruling parties have failed and repressed the people. Otis Richmond, reviews the history of resistance by courageous black athletes that set the stage for this latest epic moment.

Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 190 Do The White Thing

Sept. 2, 2020, 9:15 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another five months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

In Memory of Glaciologist Konrad Steffen

Sept. 1, 2020, 9:51 p.m.
Professor Steffen was a renowned scientist who did research at the world’s two largest ice sheets, Antarctica and Greenland. His 30-year study of Greenland proved to the world that the ice sheet melting is accelerating. Glaciers are both losing mass and sliding into the ocean faster. On August 8, 2020, Konrad Steffen fell into a crevasse that had opened next to the research station that he had founded in 1990. He was 68 and had gone out on a routine data collection walk. Professor Konrad Steffen began his studies in the Arctic in the 1970s, founded Swiss Camp, the Lab and dining room for scientists and students in 1990 and worked there almost every year. He was also a professor of geography at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Swiss Camp was built above the Arctic Circle on the ice sheet that covers most of the island of Greenland. It sits atop a wooden platform on posts driven 12 meters into the ice. As the glacier below it began to shift, the entire camp moved with it, sliding up to several inches a day from its original GPS location. Swiss Camp also rose on its posts above the ice sheet as the glacier below melted down - as much as 12 feet in four years. This program includes excerpts from a December 5, 2017 lecture he gave in Switzerland where he was born and the audio from a brief film made about him in 2017. There are obits in all major media that tell the story of an extraordinary life and of the tragedy of the destruction of the Greenland ice sheet.

Canada and the Lima Group Part of US Plan Against Venezuela

Sept. 1, 2020, 7:09 p.m.
Phil interviews journalist and author, Arnold August, about the possibility of US military intervention in Venezuela. This "October Surprise" is a possible military attack, geared up to boost Trump's re-election. August observes that the Lima Group, of which Canada is a leading member, has no mailing address, no fax number, and no phone number. It is merely a front for the US empire, claiming that it supports a "peaceful transition to democracy in Venezuela." Canada was silent when the US openly supported naval and terrorist attacks on Venezuela. August uses the opportunity of the interview to call upon all members of the Canadian Parliament and Canada's trade union leaders to distance themselves now from any "October surprise," and from pretender Juan Guaido. August also states that he will join the Green Party of Canada precisely to participate in the election of Dimitri Lascaris, who has traveled to Venezuela and reported favourably from there about the Maduro government. Finally, August outlines two of the pretexts being used to drum up support for military intervention in Venezuela. One is the claim that Venezuela is doing a poor job in fighting COVID-19. Actually, Venezuela is doing relatively well on this score while Peru and Colombia [Canada's main partners in the Lima Group] are doing very poorly. The other pretext is that Venezuela is a narco-state. Nothing could be further from the truth. Colombia is the main narco-state in South America.

John Stoehr on the 2020 Presidential Election

Sept. 1, 2020, 1:54 p.m.
In a little over 10 weeks, every American citizen will have the opportunity to have their vote counted to either elect a new president or to keep the current president in place. Or that’s what’s supposed to happen in theory, anyway. In reality, the principle of “one person, one vote” is violated in American electoral practices. This week on Sea Change Radio, we talk to political writer John Stoehr of The Editorial Board about the upcoming American presidential election, and about the gross inequities built into the electoral college system. We also discuss whether the goal of unifying the country should take a backseat to advancing truth, justice, and equity. And we contemplate what Donald Trump’s end game is for this election — is he truly driven by a desire to lead the country for four more years, or is he mostly just thinking being president is the best way to stay out of prison?

Fayrouz Sharqawi and Alys Samson Estapé on dealing with COVID-19 while resisting the occupation

Aug. 31, 2020, 10:52 a.m.
Coronavirus has not even slowed Israel's murderous oppression of Palestinians. Sharqawi and Estapé discuss its impact in Palestine, how the Palestinians are organizing themselves to continue resisting the occupation, and how we can help to put an end to international complicity with the Israeli apartheid regime. Plus a Mondoweiss article:If you care about Palestinian human rights, the Democratic Convention last week was a total heartbreak. The issue was never mentioned in any of the primetime speeches; the party leadership crushed the party’s leftwing base on the question. It was all but removed from the platform, per the instructions of Joe Biden himself reportedly… Kamala Harris is an AIPAC-style Israel supporter who famously was dumbfounded when the New York Times asked her about problems with Israel’s human rights record… Joe Biden has been visiting Israel for nearly 50 years and counts every Israeli prime minister including Netanyahu as a dear friend, and he went out of his way to stomp on Palestinian activist Linda Sarsour. The Dems’ message is clear. Joe Biden is the most pro-Israel nominee for president, ever. We will not be out-Israel’d by Donald Trump.
