Dr. Stanley Donner - Origins of Public Television
June 3, 2020, 11:18 p.m.
We all know that people listen to radio and watch television. The difference between radio and television is in the image. When you listen to radio, your mind creates the image for you. When you watch television, a ready-made image is flashed before your eyes. The early days of television were days of great creativity, when the questions of âhowâ and âwhat should we doâ were present at all levels of production, ownership and programming. In the early 1950s, a young professor from Stanford University named Stanley Donner was creatively engaged in the development of public television in San Francisco, California. In the last 50 or so years, Professor Donner has participated in and followed the development of this mind-boggling medium.
Dr. Stanley Donner recommends âThe Hedgehog and the Fox: An Essay on Tolstoyâs View of History,â by Sir Isaiah Berlin.
Originally Broadcast: September 11, 1998
Volume 177 Monday in the Park with George
June 3, 2020, 8:14 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another six months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.
Herman's Radio & Record Room #5
June 3, 2020, 5:39 p.m.
My father Herman Frederick Moe was a radio repairman, country & western cowboy singer, and rustic guitar player. He performed in the late 1930âs on live radio before he enlisted in World War II as a radio-telephone technician. This show is my homage to him.
My father was a radio engineer and electrician; yet he loved the other side of radio as well â the listening side â it kept him company during many lonesome nights in the 30âs, 40âs, 50âs & 60's.
From my imagination to your ears â itâs WHFM â vintage music & radio shows from mid century America. This is music that I believe he would have enjoyed.

Megan Milliken Biven: Mississippi Dredging
June 2, 2020, 3:18 p.m.
Some of Louisianaâs best buffers against the storms that lash its coast annually are the little spits of land in the Gulf of Mexico -- they slow down hurricanes and help throttle storm surges. But as sea level rise is eroding these coastal wetlands, new land buffers are being built up through dredging, in order to protect Gulf Coast residences and habitats. Unfortunately, those dredging efforts are falling woefully short. This week on Sea Change Radio, we talk to shoreline expert Megan Milliken Biven to learn all about dredging in the Mississippi Delta. We discuss the inadequate number of boats known as âhopper dredges,â look at the relationship between dredging and the region's oil and gas industry, and examine what policies could turn things around before the next major hurricane hits the Big Easy.
Anand Giridharadas in Conversation: On Wealth VS Democracy - Part TWO of TWO
June 2, 2020, 3:04 p.m.
Even though his book: Winners Take All, The Elite Charade of Changing the World, was published back in 2018 Anand Giridharadas is still in demand as speaker and writer on that topic. The inequality of wealth and power has grown and Giridharadasâ reach now is international.
This is the conclusion of a one hour conversation. Towards the end of Part ONE John Dankosky and Anand Giridharadas had gotten into a heated argument over the efficiency of government with Dankosky making the case for those who claim that many government functions should be transferred to private companies.
Giridharadas made the counter-argument for the efficiency of the federal court system and restated his support for social security and universal healthcare. He also answered the question: Is there an ethical ways of being a billionaire; and lays out how the corona virus could lead to an age of imagination and reform - or move even more power into the hands of corporations. The talk ends with a very inspiring reading list and a poem he wrote with his 5-year old son.
Giridharadas is an editor-at-large for Time; an on-air political analyst for MSNBC, and a visiting scholar at the Journalism Institute at New York University.
On May 19, 2020, Anand Giridharadas was interviewed, from his home, for the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven, Connecticut. His interviewer was John Dankosky, a 25-year veteran of public radio.

Dems + Repubs are the knee on black American necks
June 1, 2020, 8:50 p.m.
Part 1:
"Dems + Repubs are the knee on black American necks."
Phil analyses the recent fightback in the USA in reaction to the police killing of George Floyd as an uprising against systemic racism towards black Americans. The Democrats and Republicans are the knee that's on the neck of black people in the USA. They have forgotten what the US Civil Rights movement taught Americans: black people were victims of systemic racism and something had to be done to rectify it. That something was affirmative action.
Part 2:
"Five Eyes lose an eye."
Phil notes that the Globe and Mail failed to indicate that New Zealand did not sign onto the "Five Eyes" statement expressing displeasure with China's new law regarding Hong Kong. He asks if the big ship of the Anglo-Saxon Empire is starting to list. It's a sign that, even in the closest embrace of the imperial centre, the allies are getting cold feet.
Traditional allies of the USA are worrying about the implications of Trump's continuing dismantling of treaties and international organizations, such as the World Health Organization. Cynically, Trump is blaming China and the WHO for his own pandemic failures. In fact, China did a fine job in breaking the chain of COVID-19 transmission. The WHO correctly lauded China's efforts and declared the spread of COVID-19 a pandemic.
The spineless reaction of the Trudeau government is simply to parrot the US line on Hong Kong and Taiwan, in support of Meng Wanzhou's arrest. The Canadian government should recognize that the "bully" is the US, not China.
