Spy World: Inside the Canadian and American Intelligence Establishments
The fact that governments spy on each other is no secret. The fact that they also collect data about lives of millions of innocent citizens worldwide may be unknown to many people. Mike Frost, the author of âSpy World: Inside the Canadian and American Intelligence Establishments,â worked as a spy for over 30 years. Mike traveled worldwide, setting up devices to intercept what were thought to be secret international communications. Mike Frost has since retired as a spy and has many thoughts and considerations about his former job. Our discussion led to a two-part program, originally broadcast in April of 1999.
Mike Frost recommends the movie, October Sky.
Originally Broadcast: April 6, 1999 & April 13, 1999
Donald Drumpf Theatre Volume 189 Vote
Aug. 26, 2020, 9:16 p.m.
An original radio theatre show each week, with most sounds culled from the previous week, about a fictional, theatrical presidency. Contradictions tell the story, with songs, skits, and clips from political news shows and late-night comedy routines. The definition of "radio theatre" is stretched here, with an updated Dickie Goodman and/or Richard Foreman-meets-mashup style sometimes, and a more straightforward take other weeks. Currently airing on 30 or 40 stations around the world, the network has ordered another five months of episodes. Anyone who would like to work on a production, or have their work air in this timeslot, should contact info@wgxc.org.

Witness To The Melting Of The Greenland Ice - TUC Archives
Aug. 25, 2020, 4:02 p.m.
Ithluk was recorded by Cien Fuegos in July, 2007, during a rainstorm in the Valley of the Ancients on Greenland.
When I first heard his voice in 2007 I wished I could move radio stations to play this recording every day to show that voices like his can reach us and inspire us to recognize our common future and save Greenland from melting. But even though there is enough water bound up in the Greenland ice sheet to raise sea level by 21 feet and drown the cities of London and New York this program had a limited reach.
And now, in August 2020 a headline in the British Guardian read: Greenland ice sheet lost a record 1 million tons of ice per minute in 2019. The research was done by the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven, Germany.
The climate crisis is heating the Arctic at double the rate in lower latitudes, and the ice cap is the biggest single contributor to sea level rise, which already imperils coasts around the world. The ice sheet shrank by 532 billion tons last year as its surface melted and glaciers fell into the ocean.
Scientists say âIf we look at the record melt years, the top five occurred in the last 10 years, and that is a concern. But we know what to do about it: reduce CO2 emissions.â

Under Pressure: Jeremy Hance
Aug. 25, 2020, 3:50 p.m.
These dark and troubling times have left very few of us stress and anxiety free. So we thought we'd check in with an expert on germophobia and anxiety. No, our guest this week on Sea Change Radio is not a psychologist. He is an environmental journalist, writer for Mongabay, and long-time friend of the show, Jeremy Hance. Hance has struggled with mental illness and anxiety for decades, and recently wrote a book documenting his travails. "Baggage: Confessions of a Globetrotting Hypochondriac," is brave, thoughtful and often quite hilarious. Our discussion with Hance may just give you a different perspective the next time you read an investigative piece that takes place in some exotic locale. Perhaps it will also lend perspective as we all struggle with our own negative thoughts and uneasiness.
No Good Intentions: US Sanctions Are Designed to Harm People
Aug. 24, 2020, 9:10 p.m.
Phil interviews Stephen Gowans, Canadian political blogger at "What's Left." In his brand-new article on Syria, "Cruelty with a Point: The Continuing Immiseration of Syria," Gowans points out that liberal critics of US foreign policy, such as Joshua Landis and Steven Simon, believe that US foreign policy is basically benevolent, bringing democracy and prosperity to the world.
Sometimes, however, they argue that US foreign policies are misguided, as on Syria, and end up as pointlessly cruel, creating starvation, sickness, and death.
These liberals miss the point that the USA is an empire whose goal of hegemony requires continuous acts of cruelty, such as sanctions and military interventions. Gowans points out that US sanctions, for example, have been leveled on Syria 1979. It backed a rebellion in Syria in 1982, it started a proxy war for regime-change in 2011. Its latest regime of 'Caesar Sanctions' have tanked the Syrian currency, and caused widespread hunger.
Landis and Simon neglect to mention that Washington's Long War on Syria (the title of Gowans' book) are flagrantly illegal, and in violation of Syrian sovereignty.
